I wonder if there would be any way to route the recorded video, as its being recorded, through the hdmi port and go straight to a hard drive of some kind???

i think they are starting to do that to the SLRs...but that may be impossible with these...

Simple answer - no. Even if you can get "live video" out the HDMI port (a big challenge on recent cameras), and if you have hardware on your PC to record from that HDMI feed, the camera will still stop when its local FAT32 video file hits 4GB.

I appreciate all the help guys.... Script #3 is really the best option simply bc of being able to turn the backlit screen off during recording, which saves a decent amount of battery...however its the "record" button, and not the "display" button that turns it off.
