I just purchased a used powershot Elph 500 HS and I have not been able to load CHDK :(.  I can't seem to get the option "firmware update" to appear in the menu, or even check the firmware version.  I have tried starting the camera in "play" mode but the option does not show up.  Any help would amazing!  Thank you all for your wonderful CHDK work!

Do you have the CHDK ps.fi2 file in the root of your SD card ?   The "firmware update" option only appears in the Canon menus if that file exists.

My ACID app is the simplest way to check the firmware version and then download and unzip the right build (including the PS.FI2 file). Just take a photo with the camera and drop it on the ACID window. See http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/acid/acid.html

I checked the firmware with acid, worked great.  The firmware is version 101a.  I put all the chdk files for that version of the firmware directly on to the card.  I used the play button to turn the camera on, went to the menu button without doing anything else and there still was no "firmware update" option.  The ps.F12 file is in the root menu.  Any help!!!!

Thank you!

A quick look at the porting thread shows that firmware update method works on this camera.

Are you using a Mac to setup your SD card ?   If so,  read this carefully :

AHHHHHHHH!  Thank you!  The second link for using a Mac was the trick.  I have only set up one G12 with chdk in the past.  And I had forgotten about that.  Thank you so much!  Is there a place where chdk members post timelapse they made using chdk?  I would love to get some inspiration from others and post my stuff!

Thank you sooooo much for your help!

Just to point out that if you use ACID to download and unzip a build onto your Mac you will avoid the Mac quarantine problem that waterwingz pointed at.

I used a virtual desktop (like Parallels) to drop the files into the card.
