Raw from SX40HS firmware version i?

I am unable to read any of the raw files from my SX40HS. The firmware is version "i", and I am using the "i" version of CHDK.

I have previously used CHDK with my A590 and can read raw files from that camera without any issues, so I am fairly certain the issue is with the raw files from the SX40HS, not the applications I am using to read them.

RAW is not a format - its a sensor dump.  Every camera sensor is different.  And support for each sensor takes a time to make its way through the system.   Most RAW support in different PC apps is based on a library called dcraw - and it recognizes a RAW file based on file size.  Your camera is new and it probably does not recognize it yet.  And all the other PC software packages don't either as a result .

Your RAW files are probably just fine.   Or as good as it gets with CHDK.

Shoot in DNG, it will open in almost any application.

I understand the SX40HS is a new model, and the CHDK is still a Beta version for this model.

I had seen other postings here about raw files from the SX40HS which led me to believe others were getting raw files from the camera that could be read. However, I don't know what version of the firmware they have.

Is it possible that the firmware version "i" in my camera (apparently the most recent firmware for this model) would make a difference in being able to produce a readable raw file with CHDK?

In the meantime, I will try DNG.

Its possible if the buffer addresses have shifted and the person doing the port did not take that into account.  But it looks like philmoz did the port so I'd suggest you google the phrase "jake fell off his horse" if you want odds on him making that mistake.

In any case,  if DNG works for you then by definition, your RAW files are correct.

I have an SX40HS running version i and the DNGs from the autobuild I downloaded last week are fine.

Hi,

I can use the DNG format to take pictures that are readable in other applications.

Is it possible to use CHDK to convert existing raw images (taken before I set CHDK to save DNG) on the memory card to DNG?

I have tried several applications to read the raw files but it seems that the SX40HS model is too recent to be supported, so that does not appear to be an option at the present.

I think you could do the same for the SX40H with a little work.

Thanks for those links waterwingz. :)

I did install DNG4PS-2 and I did notice that you could create/modify camera profiles, but did not understand how I could get the right info for my camera.

I'll try the color calibration target method, perhaps the developer will respond although the info says he is no longer working on it.

If you have trouble with the color calibration,  he might be able to give you some more tips.
