Has anyone tried using Sandisk Extreme 32gig SDHC?  Did it improve shooting raw with SX40?  I've used Samsung class 6 and it's good enough for video.  Canon's video outputs about 4 megabytes of data per second using stock firmware.  I know Raw seems to be more, but I thought the sx40 should have internal buffer right, so shooting raw shouldn't have a long wait (1 or 2 second) per raw.  I've had the same result using the class 10 card that's known to be capable of writing 10.2 megs per second. 

When you write back, please tell me if you have experience using the sx40 in conjunction with the sandisk extreme 32gig SD card.  My thinking is that if sandisk's extreme card gives lack luster performance shooting raw specifically with the sx40, then there's a good chance I would ebay this camera since I got it from Fry's Electronics on sale for $270.  The biggest let down was the lack of raw using native firmware, and also the slowness in shooting raw in CHDK's hack.  I really need Raw mode.

Canon, once again, you are cheap and stingy!

I really would like to know before I open a package of sandisk 32 gig card.  I've also read that this camera gets really hot after 20 minutes of video?  Is this true??  If so, then maybe it's not such a good idea to have a 32 gig card as a 16 gig is enough?

Ummmm .. maybe people are a little afraid to reply and set off another rant ? :P

But more likely nobody who regularly watched this forum has your camera and that exact SD card.

FWIW,  if you search this forum for RAW and other keywords like write speed or delay you'd learn that the write speed to the SD card is only part of the time delay when using RAW.  CHDK itself does some processing of the RAW buffer and that causes some of the delay.

thanks wateringz :)  No more rant from me.  check out the other post where you were specific about how to make it bootable.  I admitted on that thread that I goofed, that I missed the auto boot in the original readme.txt .. I must have followed the instructions and got too excited about the camera so once I got the hack working, I stopped reading the rest of it.  My fault.  Again, thank you very much.

I don't know if I am allowed to reply.  I have the SX40 and SanDisk Extreme 8G SDHC card (class 10).  So, same as your setup except smaller capacity, I don't like having too many photos (eggs) in one card (basket).

I stepped up from class 4 and 6 to class 10 to see if it would cut the chdk raw write time, as you seem to be considering doing.

It is definitely a lot faster, but still not nearly DSLR fast.  Say 1-2 seconds instead of 3-4 with the slower cards.  For fast action, I now find it marginal whereas with the slow cards it was unacceptable.  I still wouldn't say it is good, but I have never been a rapid fire spray 'n pray guy so I find the difference worthwhile and have bought more Extremes.

This is very consistent with what I have seen on my cameras using different speed cards.

It's important to note that CHDK's RAW feature does not equal to native Canon RAW. The processing of the RAW data and the saving to the card halts the Canon firmware routines.
Cameras with native RAW support can use hardware compression, multiple buffers, memory cache and the pictures can be saved to the card while shooting. All of this is unavailable for CHDK.

To display the time needed to save RAW files, just enable Show RAW saving time from the Miscellaneous Stuff - Debug Parameters menu.
Since the console output may be overwritten by the Canon OSD quickly, just run a simple script (e.g. "interval.lua" from the full CHDK package)...

DNG creation (byte swapping) needs some processing time; to save some 100ms, you can save CHDK RAW files and convert them later on a PC, e.g. with DNG4PS-2...

Fe50, thanks for the tip on displaying the raw save time.  Never would have thought to look for that!  I've tried just saving in CRW rather than DNG, and yes it does seem to shave a little time, but not enough to be worth the inconvenience of converting, for me personally.

Srsa_4c, I appreciate the insight but I'm certainly not complaining!  I still can't hardly get my head around just the fact that the camera can be made to shoot raw, and the much higher quality that results.  Complaining about the lag, to me, is like griping that my new teleporter takes 2 seconds to beam me to to Europe rather than it being instantaneous!
