Finding firmware version canon sx40hs

I have just purchased a new sx40hs. I am trying to find the firmware version. I have formatted a new 16 gb sd card and put in play back mode. Have pressed sync and disp but it doesn't show version. Do I need to put blank folders on the sd card or am I doing something wrong?

Store an empty file named "vers.req" in the card's root folder...

The firmware version can also be determined with an JPEG image from the camera, read more here:
