Recently found out about HDRAW   http://hdraw.net/

Liked the demos!

Did a Forum search using HDRAW but got nothing.

Has anyone tried it with either standard CHDK RAW or DNG conversion?

 was asked to send a CHDK RAW photo for testing. http://hdraw.net/forums/topic/23/chdk-raw

Answer is "HDRAW works ok with your RAW. Here is an example processing result: http://hdraw.net/albums/photo/view/album_id/45/photo_id/132 (I've used 'Natural' preset)"

I then downloaded and installed HDRAW.  Used the same CHDK RAW photo and it was very fast and offered  8 options (natural, bright, vivid colors...).

You are rapidly become the CHDK expert on 3rd party packages that work with CHDK.  Based on mentions in your posts,  these include PhotoAcute Studio, Focus Photoeditor,  FastStone Image Viewer, RawTherapee, DaVinci Resolve Lit, Panorama Maker 5 Pro, Autopano, Canon Digital Camera Solution, Canon Remote Capture 2.7.0,  Oloneo,  Luminance HDR , and now HDRAW.   Wow.

Anyway - HDRAW (and many other packages) most likely use David Coffin's DCRaw library.  If DCRaw can open CHDK raw for any particular camera then likely HDRAW can too.  And if DCRaw does not support a particular camera model then HDRAW won't either.   If you have a moment,  you might ask them if they are based on DCRaw on their forum ?

Meanwhile,  saving in DNG format will work regardless of DCRaw support - as Eugene points out on the HDRAW forum.

I tried HDRAW and works without any problems with CHDK RAW, but the result is very bad.
I get much better results with CameraRaw or RawTherapee.

The reason for this is I Really Like CHDK RAW!!!

Would like a CHDK RAW (not DNG because do not want to have to convert RAW) Basic Editor that has color correction similar/same as the Canon JPGs.

To date I have not found one.

I hope someday a 3rd party package will achieve color correction similar/same as the Canon JPGs.

What 3rd party package do you think has the best color correction for CHDK RAW (not DNG conversions)?

Just curious, do you have a CHDK RAW and full-resolution 'Fine' image-quality JPG straight from the camera and of the same subject you could post somewhere ?

I ask because I am not convinced of the benefits and over the years RAW 'enthusiasts' have been reluctant to provide images or are even offended that you should ask !

This is basically impossible, because "CHDK raw" has no white balance info or other meta data.  No editor is going to magically get it right, because there isn't sufficient information to do so. Plus they pretty much all use dcraw code anyway. The exception is dng4ps2, which uses the jpeg for the meta data. Of course, it outputs a DNG, and you don't want DNG for some reason...

Don't understand. If you use CHDK raw, you have to convert in some way. DNG has the same data as the raw, plus the meta data. If the saving time is an issue, that's a fair complaint, but otherwise, I don't get it ?

@KenO - you talk about conversion - no PC conversion is needed, since CHDK can save raw images directly in DNG. You can get the DNG straight form the camera, without converting CRW/CR2/RAW to DNG.

DNG saving time is a little bit longer than RAW but it's not rally big difference. For me it's unnoticeable.

Thanks for your suggestion!

It has taken me a while but am ready to try in camera DNG.

To make things confusing "there are two different, unrelated badpixel removal systems. One is for DNG, and removes only bad pixels known to the canon firmware. If you use DNG 1.2, then the badpixel.bin file must be generated. If you use DNG 1.3, then CHDK just uses some meta-data in the DNG file to tell DNG programs that pixels with zero value are bad."
