Idea: IS Lens shift 3D photos

Hi!

I've been wondering, would it be possible to control the lens shift of the Image Stabilization through code?
It would enable us to take bracketed 3D photos.

Basic idea:
Move lens shift to the left. Take a photo. Move to the right. Take photo.

So for starters we need to know how is Image Stabilization implemented. In hardware or software?
And would that lens shift be enough to create 3D?

Cheers,
Ignas

Move lens shift to the left. Take a photo. Move to the right. Take photo.

I have tried it with the S95.

It does not produce enough lens shift for normal photography.

It will give a stereo effect if the subject is very close, like a few cm.

Canon do make a professional camcorder that does provide sufficient shift.

It means that with two (of these expensive camcorders) you can set the stereo window at a few metres even though the camera's optical axes remain parallel.

That means there is no keystone distortion.

That's a shame. But it's still fascinating that Canon is not new to this concept!

Well, but we have SDM :)

ideally, you would want the two lenses to be about as far apart as our eyes on our face, that would provide sufficient shifting. good idea though :)

I also want to know how to do this in software, but I have a different use.  I want to move the lens to track star movement to increase exposure time.  This should work, as even the smallest movement can allow exposures by many seconds.  For example I've found that stars would move a pixel every 2s, so a shift of 20pixels could increase my exposures by 10x.

Interesting use.

Which camera and firmware version do you have ?

Can CHDK control the IS? I wasn't aware of that. Could you elaborate? How about on the G1X 100g?

Yes, no problem.

It is almost 2 am so I am not feeling very alert, but there are firmware functions that can be called.
I did this with SDM some time ago.

In the 'morning' I will check if I saved a copy of the test code that used left/right buttons to move lens.

EDIT:
Note to self .. build 77, 11th November 2011
Lens moved to extreme positions, single steps not tested.
