Is there anyway one can "permanently" set fine/superfine mode without having to enter the software upgrade everytime one uses the camera?

Would appreciate a reply also via my E-mail ID: novaudio.com as I am not a frequent user of this forum.

No.   But you can set CHDK to load every time you start the camera (SD Card Lock method - search the wiki for it) and that will retain your fine/superfine setting.
