Canon S95 failing to start or boot with CHDK.

Okay, Hi folks
I just bought a new Canon S95 yesterday and tried setting it up for CHDK without any luck.
The firmware version is "GM1.00K" so I did use the "K" version of the build.
What I am getting is:
- it does boot up in "PLAY" mode after I press the <ALT> button.
- I make the selections in the CHDK menu to make the card bootable and do select "SAVE" before exiting and shutting down the camera.
- I do lock the SD card after shutting down and inserting to start again.
-It will not display the CHDK yellow banner when starting the camera normally using the "ON/OFF" button.
- I have tried two different SD cards, one 32gb and one 8gb card.
- I have had all day to play with it so I have tried all the methods outlined in the articles on how to do it.
- I have done this before with my Canon G9 so while not recent, I have been able to do it.

Any suggestions or experiences that might enlighten me to get it working?
Thanks,
Steve

S95 is a pre-2011 camera, so to autoboot from a large >4GB SD card, you will need to use two partitions. To autoboot, the small partition will need to be "first". It sounds like you are loading with "firm update" so you can use swap partitions in CHDK to do this.

See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card
Don't forget what the H stands for.

The S95 was release prior to 2011 so it will not boot from a FAT32 formatted card.   You will need a dual partition setup with the smaller boot partition formatted FAT16.  Is that what you've done ?

I set my S95 up just yesterday (also K version)  I used the instructions here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Using_SDMinste_to_Create_Dual_Partition_SD_cards

Download SDMinste which is in the SDM common files zip file.  It's a stand alone utility.  Took me a couple tries but definitely worked.

BTW just format Quick, saves time and works fine.

Here are some instructions I typed up to remind me of what is going on after I figured out what was actually happening:

Launch sdminste
   -create two partitions
   -format one
   -swap
   -format the other
-copy all CHDK zip file contents to larger
-copy any scripts you want to larger
   -swap
   -make smaller bootable
-copy diskboot.ini from CHDK zip file to smaller
   -lock and go

OH, BTW you will have to swap partitions again to see your pictures when you put the card back in the computer.  Since the FAT/boot partition will be the visible one.

As the author of that page,  I'm kind of curious about your comments.  Did you find it too verbose and thus wrote your shortcut version ?   I think it might be good to put that in a text box or something on the page if that's okay with you ?

Nah I thought the page was worded very well.  And the instructions were easy to follow and helped me accomplish my goal.  Thanks for making them available!

I just made that text file for my self. So next time I forget how to do it instead of relearning the whole thing again I can just quickly look back at my notes and hopefully remember how I did it the first time :P  Feel free to use it or modify it.
I keep all my CHDK stuff on my google drive so I have copied your instructions plus my "shortcut notes" on to it.  Helps if I need to make a CHDK card away from home.  I don't have to go hunt down all the utilities, builds, instructions, etc...

I apologize for the delay in getting back to you folks, life has a way of getting extremely busy for me!
Thank you for the incredibly quick replies with accurate information.
I did try the 2 partition option, but for some reason there was something I did wrong obviously. I was also thinking that the latest firmware version being put out well after the camera was designed would have negated the issue, but not the case with hardware components used from a pre-2011 design. I have been too long away from computers to keep my thinking up to speed!

To "waterwingz". No, your reply was easy enough to read and understand I had no problems with it after I got some sleep! The information received through you worked on the first time. Of course you may use the original posting if you wish as it would help anyone else.

Thank you all again for your help.
