Odds of a D20 release... pretty good, right?

Hi all!
long time reader, 1st time poster/member.

I lose cameras a lot- and I'm hard on them. For the 2nd time in 3yrs, I've managed to lose or destroy both my and my girlfriend/wife (newlyweds)'s camera on the same trip.

So-- imagine my excitement when a canon with all the waterproof and durability features I need was released along with the high speed (slow motion) modes that I also use the heck out of. The final YES to purchase this (in spite of its recent release and consequently high current price) would be the existence of CHDK support.

The camera I'm describing is Canon's new D20 point and shoot. We are leaving for another trip next month so I am shopping and will have to buy before we leave. I'm pretty confident that someone will eventually get to developing a CHDK for this camera, but I wonder how long it will take? Any thoughts? I'd love to have the opportunity to do some interval shooting or pull other camera tricks with this P&S during our trip, but maybe it takes years for a camera to get popular and mainstream enough that these kits are developed. I don't really know.

Overall I guess I'd like to know that it is a pretty safe bet that a CHDK will eventually exist for this model, especially given that it is the evolution of the D10 which is currently supported in beta from what I understand.

FWIW, the D10 being supported doesn't say anything about the D20. As the FAQ waterwingz linked says, ports are done by the people who have the camera. There is no pattern or schedule or central plan, and models sharing a name doesn't make them easier to port.

In the case of D10, I did the port because a forum user wanted it badly enough that they bought the camera for me. I'm not looking to do this again, but it's possible someone else would. This isn't a particularly good deal for the programmer: For a ~$300 camera the programmer is getting less than minimum wage for their time.

Well.. maybe I'm not going to receive a D20

. I started a blind port for this camera, rdumont99 is testing the first version, there are some bugs, but CHDK boots...

I've been threatening to buy the D20 for awhile, so I'm glad nafraf is making progress on it. It must be selling pretty well because Amazon just raised the price by $6, which makes it $36 more than the price a few months ago. It just went out of stock at walmart.com too.

It uses the same battery as the SX260, so I've already got extra batteries and chargers for it. The Canon site says the D20 works with the AC Adapter Kit ACK-DC40, which is the same as the SX260. There's a flap in the battery door of the SX260 where you plug in the AC adapter. Is this present in the D20? It seems it might break the water seal.

I think nafraf did the port for the sx260 without owning the camera, and it's working great now, so the D20 should be ready pretty soon. I'll be getting it within 6 weeks.

I've been able to make the G1X fairly water resistant with a piece of plastic wrap, and a rubber band around the base of the lens. I trim the extra plastic wrap with a scissor, and tape the plastic wrap around where the external power cable comes out. I wound another thin piece of wrap around the lens barrel with the camera on, and taped it to a lens hood. The camera ran overnight with temperature below freezing. The lens hood was frosted, but the lens was clear. I think the heat generated by the camera helped keep the lens clear.

You can see the screen through the plastic wrap, and work all the buttons with no problem.

D20 has its own power connector too. Pointed as 13 at page 5 of D20 User Guide
Your solution seems to be better for your application.

Yes. If you weren't concerned planning to actually immerse the camera in water, it should be pretty easy to make a reasonably waterproof block that fits where the door closes and passes through power and/or USB.
