Hi! I have an S5 IS and, while I'm waiting for a version to come out for the S5, I thought I'd throw in a little feature request that I'd love to see when I get the opportunity to use CHDK.

I noticed that when you switch to the sports scene mode, the camera automatically switches to 320*240*60FPS live view mode and turns off shot previews. I can tell the resolution and framerate change by the increased noise and smoothness of the video. What I'd like to have in CHDK is an override for this, to enable 320*240*60FPS live view all the time. A shortcut for this would be awesome too, so that you can enable it quickly for fast-moving shots and then switch it back to 640*480*30FPS when you need the extra detail.

Would this be too much work, or something relatively easy to implement? Either way, I'd appreciate it very, very much! Thanks!

Hmm. I guess if the viewport_live-buffer was updated @60fps, motion detection time would decrease, too... :] On A710 there's no sports scene mode, but fast frame rate (claims to be 60fps) video mode does update the lcd faster.

Hey, thanks for your reply, Barney! I switched back and forth between sports mode and another mode for a while, while pointing the camera at my monitor, and it seems that you're right about it refreshing as fast as it can based on the shutter speed. Although it still raises the question of why sports mode appears to have larger, more visible noise in the preview than other modes.

Thanks for the tip about review mode! I didn't realize I could keep the previous shot on-screen by holding the shutter button down. I'd always set it to 2 second review and raced to hit the delete button before it disappeared, then hit cancel. I guess I should spend more time reading that manual!

This is true, but I tried boosting the ISO in Program mode and it didn't create the noise that it does in sports. It's very weird.

Hmmm... Now that CHDK is out for the S5, I've done some more experimentation, and I'm absolutely certain that the S5 switches to 60FPS live view in sports mode, and that other modes use 30FPS. I've tried setting the shutter speed in Manual mode, including boosting the ISO up to 1600, and I'm convinced that it makes no difference to the noise visible in the live preview. Only the gain makes a difference, and the gain chosen is affected by the light level of the room. You only get an accurate preview of the exposure when you half-press the shutter.

So my suggestion should still stand. I'd love to have a way to choose when to use 60FPS for the live preview. Not to mention the ability to set a minimum focus distance for the autofocus, to reduce hunting if you know that your target will always be a certain distance away (sports mode does this too).

What happens when u engage the canon live histogram (not the chdk one!) display should update in realtime,not only @ halfpress.

Er, my mistake. It's accurate in manual mode, but in Program mode, it's not an accurate simulation of the exposure until you half-press. When you half-press, the aperture stops down and the gain resets, giving you an accurate simulation of what the actual photo will look like. For example, switch the camera to Program mode at night. The screen will gain up considerably. Now point it at something and half-press the shutter, and it should get darker as it adjusts the gain to match what the image will look like.
