I have CHDK installed on my camera and have a bunch of RAW (CRW) files that I need to convert to JPG.  However, I am unable to find anything that will handle these CRW files.

I tried using the Canon utilities software DPP and Zoom browser to no avail.

How can I make use of these CRW files?

This is probably the most common question people ask on this forum once they have succeeded in getting CHDK to load and run.   CHDK RAW files are not the same thing as the RAW or CR2 files produced on DSLDR and higher end P&S cameras.  They are simply a dump of the raw information directly from the camera sensor.   They contain no format or size information to tell a PC software package how to interpret the information they contain.

Having said that, some PC software packages can guess the layout on the sensor information in the file based on the file's size if the author of that package has been informed that a new CHDK port has been released  and told of the file format.
Until that happens, DNG format files contain the information necessary for PC software to interpret the image data so its best to use them.

Convert them to DNG format with DNG4PS-2, you'll find also the G12 settings on this wikia page...

Is there a way to use CHDK, but keep the original RAW format that the G12 produces when not using CHDK?

I love CHDK, but when I want raw when using CHDK and it saves the RAW as CRW, I am NOT able to get this converted so I can work with them images.

NOTE: I have downloaded DNG4PS-2 and followed the updates and settings in the app, but I get the following error:
C:\Users\Public\Pictures\CRW_0267.CRW
Error: Can't find camera profile for this file

I updated the settings in the app for my G12 as indicated above, but I am not certain the CRW files have any EXIF information about my camera so Its not going to find it :(

FYI: I didnt realize this but to Convert the CRW, you must have the .JPG as well. Then it will create the .DNG.  What does it need from the JPG? Its so compressed already. I dont understand.

So, now I have DNG files...how do I benefit from DNG files over the regular JPG I have? How do I work with these DNG to get them into a friendlier format again after I have cleaned up the images?

Just enable Canon RAW in the Canon menu.

It takes the EXIF information from the JPG and uses it in the header of the DNG file.

DNG is basically RAW with EXIF information added (and a small swap of byte order).  DNG is a pretty friendly format already - that's the point of using it - pretty much any photo software will work with it.

Will GIMP work with DNG? Or any of my Canon Utilities Software from my G12 camera work with DNG?

Yes  Update :  Requires the UFRaw plugin - which can take a lot of work to install.

I opened the file with GIMP. The image is 20MB, yet the image in GIMP is at 256x192!  I followed the setup and settings in DNG4PS-2.  Stumped!
