The image is 20MB, yet the image in GIMP is at 256x192!
That's the embedded thumbnail. AFAIK Gimp doesn't support a bitdepth over 8bits (24bits total) anyway, better try Raw Therapee: http://rawtherapee.com/downloads

I opened the file with GIMP. The image is 20MB, yet the image in GIMP is at 256x192!  I followed the setup and settings in DNG4PS-2.  Stumped!

Apparently you need to install the UFRaw plugin.  I'm doing that now but its a bit complicated.

Here's a link to some other packages of possible interest : http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Software#RAW_related

I downloaded RawTherapee and now converted to JPG or TIF.  Any one of those whether viewing or editing appears totally grainy. As if the software does not support the RAW impage.  Google Picasa does this when I open CR2...any CRW>DNG>JPG or TIF will do the same grain view on the images.

I will never use CHDK to enable RAW saving.  Bummed...Really BUMMED

Did it give you a choice of compression level when you did the conversion ?

That's certainly your choice to make.  But thousands of other people use it successfully.

You should not expect to just open a raw file and have it magically be better than a camera jpeg.  Raw is raw sensor data, and requires significant processing to produce a pleasing image. Modern digital cameras to a whole lot of image processing to make up for the deficiencies in the hardware. Raw doesn't give you a "better" picture, it lets you have full control of that processing by doing it on your PC

The in camera jpeg process does this, and it is very good. Canon have undoubtedly invested millions developing the image processing pipeline used on the camera. If you want to get equivalent or better results from raw, you will need to invest substantial time and effort into understanding the underlying principles and setting up a workflow to produce the desired results.

^^^ I disagree. When I do CR2 from my G12, the Canon Digital Photo software handles it with grace...the images are spectacular and I can edit them easily without any issues or grain or distortion to the image like I am dealing with these CRW>DNG>TIFF or JPG.

I learned my lesson...no more CHDK for Raw and I will be find.

It shouldn't be surprising that Canons PC software is able to produce nice looking output from Canon raw without much effort...

Not clear why you would mess with CHDK raw at all if your camera has native raw support.
