Help needed for the Canon G1 X Firmware version 1.00G

Hi,

I just purchased a Canon G1 X and the Canon service center in Mumbai, India confirmed that the firmware version number is 1.00G. Just to reconfirm I downloaded ACID and took a photo with the G1 X, ACID also confirmed 1.00G. I downloaded the CHDK for G1 X 1.00 G and copied the contents of the Zip folder to the SD card which is 4G large using my Mac. I then inserted the SD card into the Canon G1 X and instead of pressing the on key I press the green playback key to start the camera in Playback mode. Then I pressed the Func-Set button which is in the center  and then the  Disp. button which is just below it ( I assume DISP and DISPLAY are the same) . Nothing happens. If I keep the Func-Set button pressed for some time I get a clock. I formatted the SD card twice, once with the Low Level Format check box checked, once without.
I am a newbie when it comes to cameras so would someone please tell me what I am doing wrong. I know I am missing something very basic so would someone please help.

So far so good.  Here's some cautions about using a Mac for this :

Still doing fine.

Why do you want to press the Func-Set button ?  That is only needed if you are trying to get your firmware version with an SD card specially prepared for that purpose.   You already know your firmware version so no need to do that.

If you are trying to load CHDK with the "firmware update" method then you need to go through the Canon menus to the Update Firmware method and do that.

Thanks for the prompt reply  waterwingz.

After spending a long time I went through the docs once again and I realized that there was some issue with using a Mac. I did the same procedure using a PC and now when I start the camera  using the Play button and then I select the menu I see Firmware update which I never saw before. The same thing happens when I use my A800 which is Firmware version 1.00C. When I update the firmware the CHDK icon loads on my A800 and not on the G1 X and now I am in the process of figuring out what the Shortcut key on a Canon camera is so that I can check whether CHDK loaded or not.

Thanks once again for the prompt answer.

That's why I posted the first link in my reply to you ;)

Do you see a text box but not the round red icon ?  If so,  then you do not have the rest of the CHDK files loaded on your SD card properly.

Usually the Print key.

Dear All

Case closed. My sincere apologies for not reading the documentation/FAQ before asking this question. It never occurred to me that the MAC places extended attributes/permissions using the @ sign for binary files that we have downloaded from the Internet. Had I read the docs in detail , I would not have asked this question.

I tried CHDK on the G1 X Firmware version 1.00G and the shortcut key is the S on the top, everything works as advertised.

I also tried the CHDK on the A 800 Firmware version 1.00C, CHDK loads, when I press the camera button at the bottom near the menu key I get a whole lot of icons like the battery percentage. This means that CHDK has loaded. All that I am now trying to figure out is the Shortcut key on the A 800 so that I can see the menu.

A special thanks to waterwingz  for the appropriate answer.

I agree with Waterwingz that there can be a problem on a Mac with downloading and unzipping files. However, I was pretty sure that if Acid is used to do the download/unzip job, the problem is avoided (certainly I've never experienced it). Could you confirm that you used ACID to do the downloading and unzipping? If so, I'll have to do some experiments to figure out what happened.

What I used ACID for was simply to tell me what the Firmware version number was. When I passed a JPEG file to ACID this was what ACID came back with. I had all four checkboxes turned on.

SDM - no build found for Canon PowerShot G1 X 100g

Hi Vijay - the latest version of ACID (1.10 - which I uploaded over the weekend) looks at both the 'stable' and 'trunk' sites so it would have found the G1x 100g build. I guess you were using version 1.08 or 1.09 which only looked at the 'stable' site.

I have never had a problem unzipping the files first on my mac and then copying them to the sd card.
I use a custom applescript to remove all the dot files created.  i can post the file if anyone is interested.
I use SDMInst to make the sd card bootable and if the card is larger than 4GB, make the card into 2 partitions.
