I decided to re-run all of the tests again and summarise my findings for each case.

In photo mode:

v1
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD visible. Crash.

v2
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD not visible. Autofocus; requested focus not achieved.

v3
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD visible. Autofocus; requested focus not achieved.

In movie mode:

v1
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD visible. Autofocus seeks then requested focus achieved.

v2
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD not visible. Autofocus seeks then requested focus achieved.

v3
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD visible. Autofocus seeks then requested focus achieved.

One other thing that I have noticed -- and I'm not sure that it's related -- is that sometimes when I press DISP to select infinity focus I get 65535, but other times I get 65502.

Thanks for the comprehensive tests. I'll try to make a change similar to v2, hopefully I can get it accepted. If it gets accepted, you can expect it to be included in the development version of CHDK which is available here: http://mighty-hoernsche.de/trunk/
I'll leave a notice here when that happens.

About the infinite distance: I haven't checked the related code why that value is varying, but both 65535 and 65502 result in infinite focus distance on your camera.

Here's the latest candidate, if this version works well, I'm going to request this change to be added into the development version of CHDK. This should work as v2, but it doesn't need AF lock in movie mode to do SD override.

Note that this is CHDK 1.1 . To successfully use it, you'll need to copy at least the CHDK/Modules folder to your card in addition to DISKBOOT.BIN or PS.FIR . It also uses a separate configuration file, so it will not load your current CHDK settings.

Please find the test results below.

In photo mode:

v4
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD not visible. Autofocus; requested focus not achieved.

In movie mode:

v4
AFL enabled: SD visible. Requested focus achieved immediately.
AFL disabled: SD visible. Autofocus seeks then requested focus achieved.

Thanks.

update: FYI, the patch is currently pending, I'm waiting for confirmation whether the A2200 port could use the same solution.
update 2: Done.

The Canon A590is-101b has the same problem. It crashes sometimes when doing this and a half press.

The A590 has manual focus, if you find that subject distance override makes the camera crash in AF mode but not in MF mode, then SD override should be restricted to MF mode.
If you can compile CHDK from source, try to add
#undef  CAM_CAN_SD_OVER_NOT_IN_MF
to platform/a590/platform_camera.h
If not, ask for a test version :)

@srsa_4c, no more crashes when restricted to MF mode :) Thanks!
