how fast does your cam+chdk save raw+jpeg?

hi,

i was just browsing the forum in general, and came across this post:
Save RAW files in DNG format instead of RAW
which is about another issue, but touches on the issue of the time it takes to save a raw+jpeg.

in the thread, mx3 claims it takes about 5 seconds for his cam to save a raw+jpeg, while grand and a710is both claim it takes about 1 second.

i have noticed that my cam (a720 + chdk allbest version 41) takes about 3 seconds to save a raw+jpeg. i have tried setting the jpeg to the lowest setting (640x480, low quality) but it makes no difference, so it must be the raw saving that is taking this long. i am using a 133x sd-card.

does anyone else find it takes this long? is it an issue with the a720 only? i kind of expected it would take longer to save raw+jpeg than it would jpeg alone, but after reading the thread i linked to above, i wonder if there is anything i can do (settings i can change) to make the raw save a little quicker?

on my a710 it also takes longer, but I don't use that a kind of fast card, standard sandisk.
I think it's mostly about the card.

it's probably a bogus 133x card. I doubt that any kind of fragmentation could slow it down so much. look your cam writes up to around 11 MB/s on some cards.
Benchmarks - CHDK Wiki
I think you need another card to save the raw and jpeg faster.
check out the benchmarks to decide on one.
personally I like my Corsair, it writes at 9.5 MB/s but my OCZ was also writing at about 9 MB/s just that it broke down on me.

On 22nd March I checked my s3is with 1GB standard sandisk on this. Indoors, natural daylight. Shutter speed around 1/15" and ISO set at 800 (JPEGs are large at higher iso's, around 4mb's). JPEGs largest and superfine plus RAW enabled(7.2+4 mb). I shot a table clock with seconds hand in continuous mode, hand held.

7 exposures in about 14 seconds.

hmm... this is quite irritating - i used the benchmark feature (very handy that - didn't know it was even there...) to test my 8gb sdhc veho (samsung b-grade) marked as "150x", and a couple of "mymemory.co.uk" 133x 2gb cards, all of which show a raw write time of around 5-6 mb/s. (had to create a 4gb fat-16 partition on the sdhc card, due to dryos on my a720).

sounds like neither of the cards are achieving their stated speeds... feel like i've been royally done :( i bought the 8gb sdhc card first, for the sheer capacity, then discovered chdk, and decided to pick up a couple of smaller capacity non-sdhc cards to get full use. now neither are fulfilling their potential...

oh well, i'm off to tokyo tomorrow for 10 days, maybe i can pick up some decent quality high-speed cards over there...

Those "150X" markings with no other description  are often just advertised read speeds. It's intended to mislead and make users spend more money on those slow writing cards. Even so, just a few of them can keep up with their stated read speeds.

pellgarlic ... try to run the benchmark a second time and see if the score change.

hi all... back from japan - i picked up a lexar pro 2gb 133x sd-card while i was there, and it is definitely faster - the benchmark comes back at about 10mb/s, and when taking raw+jpg, it takes about half the time than with my other cards, say 1 - 1&1/2 seconds. much better! feel kinda ripped off with those other cards... might try sending them back as "not as advertised"...
