Canon SX40HS - RAW Files Not Showing On SD Card

Hi guys,

This is my first post and i'm not the sharpest tool in the box when it comes to CHDK and technical stuff.

I've managed to get CHDK onto my card and can get into the menus and want to shoot in RAW.  I somehow managed to navigate my way around to select RAW as my shooting preference, it shows RAW on my display screen and when i've taken the shot, I can see it and review it.

However, when I put the card in the pc and try to view it in my Canon Digital Photo Professional program to edit the files, they do not load up at all on the pc (normally i'd get the autoplay function come up).

Any ideas?  Am I selecting something incorrect?  Are there specific settings i'm missing in CHDK?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

Did you try just looking at the card with regular old Window's Explorer ( aka "My Computer") ?

The files are probably there but the Canon software is not looking for files with a .RAW extension.

If you are going to play with RAW files,  you probably want to read through these :

link> CHDK Wiki Page about RAW
link> CHDK Forum thread on RAW
link> CHDK Wiki Page about Raw Software
link> CHDK Forum Board for RAW
link> How do you fix lens distortion with CHDK RAW files?
link> Decoding CHDK RAW images from a new cameras
link> rawconvert utility to allow manipulation of CHDK RAW files
link> DNG4PS-2 utility to convert CHDK RAW images to DNG format

Understanding CHDK RAW is probably the most common question people ask on this forum once they have succeeded in getting CHDK to load and run.   CHDK RAW files are not the same thing as the RAW or CR2 files produced on DSLDR and higher end P&S cameras.  They are simply a dump of the raw information directly from the camera sensor.   They contain no format or size information to tell a PC software package how to interpret the information they contain.

Having said that, some PC software packages can guess the layout on the sensor information in the file based on the file's size if the author of that package has been informed that a new CHDK port has been released  and told of the file format.
Until that happens, DNG format files contain the information necessary for PC software to interpret the image data so its best to use them.

@waterwingz has given you some great links to get you started, so be sure to review them when you get a chance.

There are several ways to setup the SD card, but I suspect since you are new to CHDK you probably chose to setup the SD card the most common way - one small partition with CHDK and a larger partition with the photos. If that is the case, the camera boots from the 'active' partition (small) and places the photos on the larger partition.

Without modifying a Windows PC, the PC can only see the active partition on a SD card, so it only sees the small partition which doesn't have any photos. This would explain why the "autoplay function" isn't popping up on your PC. If this is the case, then you will need to use sdminste.exe to 'swap partitions' to the larger partition. Upon re-insertion of the SD card the "autoplay function" should now work.  The photos are located in the DCIM folder with the JPGs in the normal sub-folder and the RAW files in the 100CANON sub-folder.

Hope this helps, and welcome to CHDK. If you are also interested in stereo imagery, be sure to also check out SDM.

If this is the case he has a bigger problem as the SX40HS is a  post-Jan-2011 camera and so does not support multiple partitions.
