I'm new to CHDK, I just purchased a used Powershop A2000IS for a steal.  It would be great if I could use the more powerful firmware for shooting RAW and HDR.  The only issue is that my camera runs Firmware 1.00A.  The wiki and forum are vague on whether this firmware is compatible with CHDK.  Here is what I have done so far:

Following the direction of the wifi, I created ver.ref, and found my camera has firmware 1.00A.  The wiki is inconsistent about whether this firmware is compatible with CHDK, and which versions. 

I downloaded the stable 1.1 release of CHDK for the A2000 camera, and booted by pressing the "playback" button.  I was able to "load firmware" and get the CHDK splash screen. 

Pressing the printer/shortcut button, I got the "ALT" symbol.  Pressing the menu button gets me into something that is obviously a CHDK menu. 

Unlike the readme says, the "Make card bootable" option is not in the debug menu, but the "Misc" menu.  I press it and immediately (with no delay) get a "Operation Finished" window. 

I'm trapped in playback mode, so I turn off the camera and reboot in regular mode.  CHDK is obviously not installed, only the stock firmware. 

I tried taking out the card and flipping the "lock" switch.  I still boot in regular mode, with a warning that the card is locked. 

Any help out there?  Am I using the wrong version of CHDK for the 1.00A firmware?  Am I installing it wrong?

I think i figured out how to get into shooting mode once CHDK is loaded, and it seems to work fine.  However, when I power off the camera and start it up again, I'm back to the stock firmware.  How do I get it to auto-load?  Right now I have to go through the install process every time (start in view mode, update firmware, etc...)

What size is your card ? Is it formatted FAT16 or FAT32 ?

This camera is only able to boot from FAT16, which means that cards larger than 4GB have to be partitioned. A card that is exactly 4gb will probably be formatted FAT32 by default. See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card

4GB SDHC card, certainly formatted FAT32.  Can I format a card this big as FAT16, or should I move to a smaller card?

Also, as average card sizes get larger, isn't this going to start posing more of a problem?  Any fix in the works for SDHC cards?

I have 5 4G cards, all from different manufacturers, and they all work well and autoboot when formatted FAT16

Newer cameras handle larger cards better.  There is really no way to "upgrade" older cameras to do the same thing but at least CHDK gives you the ability to use dual partitions with larger cards on older cameras.

Newer cameras support the ability to boot off of FAT32?  So it isn't a limitation of CHDK?

I wonder what everyone will do once 64GB+ cards become the norm.  exFAT requires a license from Microsoft, which it seems relatively few manufacturers have decided to take out.  NTFS is proprietary and legally un-license-able.

No, it's dependant on the code in the Canon firmware that loads CHDK.

For autoboot, the firmware detects a special setup on the card at startup and if present loads and runs the diskboot.bin file which contains CHDK.

Prior to 2011 Canon cameras supported SD cards in FAT12, FAT16 or FAT32 format; but would only perform the above autoboot on a FAT12 or FAT16 card - so the largest autoboot partition was 4GB.

Since 2011 new cameras support FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and exFat formats and the autoboot firmware code will detect and run on anything except exFat.

Canon has already added exFat to their cameras; but a FAT32 partition can be up to 8TB, so you don't really need to use it.
