Been having fun with CHDK (firmware version 100i) on my SX40HS for a couple of days now.  I use the camera mainly for birds/wildlife photography and I have it set to go to full zoom at start up.  CHDK has now been made bootable and I've noticed a couple of things that I could use some help with. 

1) Before I can take pictures, I need to hit the power button AND half press shutter button to come out of Display.  Is this normal?

2) The EVF remains blank UNTIL reaching full zoom. Is this normal (a bit irritating when you are hoping to locate your subject before fill zoom is reached)?

3) Prior to making CHDK bootable, Lens Retract, Display Off and Auto Power Down worked.  Now they don't.  Is this normal or are there some <Alt> settings that I may need to configure?

On my SX10 IS, pressing and holding the power button for about 1 second until the lens extends causes the camera to power up in record mode when CHDK is bootable. (This is mentioned in the readme file that comes with CHDK - for the SX10 anyway).

In the "Miscellaneous" menu there is an option "Disable LCD Off" which can be set to Alt, Never, Always or Script. It's probably set to "Always" for you. (See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_firmware_usage#Disable_LCD_off for details).

I think if this script is running at startup it may be the case that it does it's stuff before the camera has time to draw the screen - I'm not sure on this one though, just guessing.

1) & 3) now completely sorted.  I guess I can learn to live with 2) when the CHDK pro's far outweigh the very minor con's  :)

Okay.  Noticed today that starting the camera by holding down the power button actually solves problem 2) so well pleased with that!  However....

I also noticed that the remaining number of shots counter is (presumably) correct when you switch on. Once you take a shot, it goes to 9999.  Not a biggie but again, is this normal?

Hmm... On my SX10 it functions as expected. It's possible this is an SX40 bug I suppose, although I haven't had any experience of that camera.

followed video tutorial step-by-step, installed chdk on my new sx40, created badpixel.bin but the count is always zero, why? aperture override always upto 11 not 16 and afterwards at any setting it takes photos at 11 only, why? shutter speed override changed to full 1 min and the camera hanged, why? iso override set to 3x10 but exif info shows iso50 afterwards at any setting it takes fotos at iso50 only, why? please help me.

The SX40 port is fairly new so it's not actually on the CameraFeatures page yet! (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CameraFeatures) This is where all the experimentally determined limits are found. On the SX30 however, f/16 seems to be only possible at longer focal lengths; f/11 is the limit at shorter focal lengths.

By "at any setting it takes photos at 11 only" do you mean if you change the original Canon settings this happens or if you change the CHDK override settings? If you mean the former that's normal, to stop this you disable the overrides in the Extra Photo Operations menu.

I think there are only certain ISO values that can be set - I think I can set 10, 50, 80 for example but not 30 (I'm not 100% sure on that though). For the second part, again could you please clarify exactly what you mean as above?

I'm sorry, I don't know why the count is always zero or the camera hangs on shutter override - it could be simply that the SX40 cannot have a shutter speed that long.

Anyone out there using an SX40 that can tell me if there is a definitive shortcut for turning the overrides on and off?  I've tried shutter half-press+up/down but can't really tell if it's working.  It's a bit of a faff having to refer to the menu each time to make certain.

There was a lot of cleanup done to overrides in the current dev trunk version 1.2.0.

In the latest version,  half-press & down toggles the override state.  I don't have an sx40 so I can't tell you how that worked with the current stable 1.1.0 version (or the archived version 1.0.0)

You might want to go into the OSD editor and setup the State display function.  That will put a NO OVERRIDES warning on your display when they are disabled.

Thanks for that.  I've sussed it at last!  It's a half-press of the shutter (until the camera 'bleeps' and NOT before) THEN press 'Up'.  Half-press of the shutter and 'Right' (ISO) toggles the OSD on/off and half-press and 'Down' toggles exposure histogram.   Wow!  I love CHDK again  :D

Just in case, the idea behind the above exercise was to have the ability to use the 10fps HiQ setting at a user defined shutter speed instead of the default 'Auto' setting which is often too slow for what I'm after.  Is there an option to have 10fps HiQ across all shooting modes (P, Tv, Av etc.) rather than being restricted to the 'Scene' mode?  I don't think there is but just in case I've missed something or there is a Jim out there who can fix it for me......  ;)
