The basic requirements for a firmware update are :

1) A CHDK ps.fi2 file in the root of your SD card.
2) Start the camera with the playback button (on the back of the camera) not the On/Off switch
3) Go to the Canon menu immediately and look for the firmware update option.

something curious about my ps.fi2 file. When i look at the file its under the "control" of adobe and says it wont open when i click on it. Does that make a difference?  But i guess there isnt any need for me to open it..?

 Ive looked thru the posts of the link you sent and will continue to do so until i get this......thanks

No.  That just means that somewhere along the way, your (ancient) WinXP installation has been told that a fi2 file is something Adobe can work with.   In this case,  its not.

Not unless you like reading a few hundred thousand bytes of random binary information.

FMSM i got it back .....after reformatting my card in the cam to start from scratch, i downloaded a fresh CHDK . I then extracted that. I then downloaded another and pulled the psi2 file out seperate. I then cut that and pasted it in card "G" away from other folders. And it has worked.

I also did change 00001E0 to BOOTDISK although you said thats not really needed. I wont celebrate too much so as not to jinx it. I dont want to trip on that part of the learning curve again.
