There is no sliding lock switch on the Canon MMC +Plus card that came with my A590 IS. How do I install CHDK as bootable if there is no lock switch?

Or play as McGyver and make new switch:) I did it using a piece of metal from beer can, match and epoxyde glue. Takes a lot of time but it's still fun ;)

MMC cards are a little different than SD cards in size and they don't have "lock switches".

The a590 accepts several card formats, including both MMC and SD.

OK, I'm back with a new 2 GB SD card which is capable of being locked. I repeated the published installation steps for two different versions of CHDK for the A590. Still no joy. The camera now gives a warning that the card is locked.

That means you either didn't make the card bootable, or you didn't get the right files on it. See http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Bootable_SD_card

Or if you are using a Mac to transfer the files, you might have this problem http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F
Don't forget what the H stands for.

I am using a PC to run Card Tricks and have clicked on Card Tricks' "bootable" button. It reports that the card was indeed made bootable.

The card needs to be formatted as FAT16 - not FAT32. It will write the BOOTABLE string to the boot block regardless of the card format so you need to check separately and reformat if necessary.

Last time I ran Card Tricks the "Format as FAT" button was grayed out. This time it is not grayed out and I'm able to format the card and it now boots up with CHDK. Thanks everyone for your help.
