Hi
 A720 IS
2GB SD card works ok
4GB SDHC Sandisk Ultra gives "Card Locked" when it's reinserted.
The dates on the  version screens don't all match those shown for the only download version. One is 2011 so I tried EOScard to format the card FAT32, but got the same result.
EOScard didn't format the whole card so I assume I didn't need to reload CHDK.
What am I doing wrong?

Below is what I get with ver and vers ...  Differences are as after the  //

Canon PowerShot A720 IS

The year refers to when the camera was released, not the card. The A720 is an old camera, it cannot boot from FAT32. Since you are using a 4GB card, the simplest approach is to format the entire card FAT16 with 64K clusters. For cards larger than 4GB, you'd need to make multiple partitions.

EOScard will not format an SD Card.  Its only function is to modify the boot sector of the SD card to indicate to the camera that the card is bootable.

Thanks both.
I assumed being "old" it would be fine as formatted by the camera so tried that first.
Sorry I didn't say that. It didn't work with the 4GB, only the 2GB.

I only tried EOScard to alter it after seeing the 2011 date on the camera and having failed - thought the camera might have changed in 2011.
Does that NT and 2011 date mean I have the "wrong" CHDK version for the camera?

"64k clusters" - I don't know what the camera does, can I specify cluster size another way? I could format the card from an XP or Win 7 PC but it's not something I know much about.

I'll try using EOSCard and the FAT 16 numbers..

The only date that matters is the date your camera was released.  That tells you whether the camera will boot from a FAT16 or FAT32 formatted card. 

The best version of CHDK to use is pretty much always the most recent version.

Reyalp was referring to the necessary cluster size for FAT16 to work on a 4G card.  You might need to know that if you are trying to format the card on your PC.    There is no way to control that on the camera.

Use XP -  right click on the icon for the SD card when you plug it in and select the format option.

That should work assuming the camera formatted the 4G card as FAT16.   You can check that on your PC as well - when you right click on the SD card, select Properties from the menu.
