Getting there slowly ... at least now I can get past the conf code (after PUP in PLAY) and go to REC mode (manual).  However, if I press the SHOOT button in CHDKPTP, the camera does the metering action as normal (AF light), but then immediately freezes there and shuts down.

ROMLOG ?  In theory yes, but I'm like a squirrel .. I have the code somewhere in some file and forgot where, so I have to look for it.    By the way, if I don't press SHOOT, and I issue just .call_event_proc("ShowCameraLog"), I do see a DEBUG0.LOG in A/.  Do you want that file while I look for the ROMLOG code?

Stupid error. GetParameterData needs 0x4000 ORed into its first argument...

Is this on the right track ?  I note that DEBUg0.LOG gets over-written each time.  Is that the correct behavior?

The log should be appended to, not overwritten (your second log does contain the lines of the first one, so that seems OK).
The debug lines are there, so I think you can go ahead. Just don't forget to make the notes about the settings. You can add long exposure test shots too (2-3 seconds are enough, one with, one without dark frame subtraction), but don't add that into the matrix, 1+1 shot will be enough. And please don't throw away the jpegs, I may need meta-data if I get confused.

This might be a bit more tedious but if I download and delete DEBUG0.LOG each time, I could tag the filename with shooting conditions and the corresponding JPG # (a more complete version of the above).  That way there is less chance I think of a tagging de-sync with appended data and due to human error.  Would that work for you ?
