I saw something interesting in the new Sony T300 review- dynamic range optimization

I don't know how it's done is it thru contrast?
anyway I was thinking the other day that altering the dynamic range thru some sort of automatic contrast switching or otherwise would be helpful.
the A710 has contrast controls, if the contrast could be adapted automatically that would be nice.

It's done with a special sort of unsharp mask (with very large radius), sometimes in combination with curves. You have similar option (with much more settings) in Paintshop (Hightlights and Shadows) and other programs
