Yep that worked.

(It popped ut something about "enabling native calls could damage your camera" ... What can actually be damaged and what can happen to the camera? Is this setting risky?)

Now another question: how can I extend battery life?
Can I use the USB connector and an external battery pack or does it have to be powered via the battery pins inside the battery bay in the camera? Are there cheap adapters available somewhere? (Canon G1X)

Native calls allow a script to execute arbitrary code in the Canon firmware.  In theory,  someone could write a malicious script to do something bad.  So native calls are disabled by default (and cannot be enabled by the script itself).

You can't run any Canon camera over the USB jack.

There are cheap units available from Amazon (or eBay) made in China.  Look for ACK-DC80.
Quality varies.

For a pricey camera like the G1X,  I'd recommend the genuine Canon version :
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=823922&Q=&is=REG&A=details

Those are all AC powered.   People have plugged them into DC-to-AC converters and run them from 12V car batteries (or the gell cells).  You can also get small switch mode power supplies to convert directly from 12V to camera voltage and just use the fake battery adapter part of the above kit.

Hello,

I am new to chdk. I installed version 1.2 on my Canon PowerShot S5IS. When I try to get the meteor.lua script to run, it always crashes with "Mecha.Create failed".

Does anyone have experiance with this error?

Does the script even run on my model?

Thanks for any help.

Try the attached version, looks like nobody yet has tried it on a camera from this generation.
I have modified this script.

Explanation:
The event procedure named 'Mecha.Create' is not available on this camera, 'MechaRegisterEventProcedure' has to be used instead.

Technically,  its not crashing.   The script checks to see if it can issue certain commands to the camera firwmare.  It the command does not work,  it issues an error message and stops.

There may be a slightly different command that can be used for your camera.  I'm away from my development machine so can't look,  but I expect srsa_4c would be able to advise here.

I've updated the meteor.lua script to take advantage of improvements in CHDK since it was first released.

download link >  meteor2.lua

Principal Changes
  • Removal of the "nasty hack" that converted seconds to only five discrete values ( 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 seconds)
  • Provides parameters for setting ISO sensitivity as well as aperture and ND filter positions
  • Adds focus at infinity options.
  • Adds configurable shot interval.
  • Zoom position can now be preset
  • LCD display off option
  • allows a choice of no dark frame, Canon darkframe (in camera),  CHDK darkframe (post processing)

Update to the current release of CHDK.   I'd also recommend using the 1.3.0 branch for its better focus at infinity capability but it's not strictly necessary.

I added 3200 & 6400 to the ISO values you can select.  You'll need to test and see if the image exposure actually changes when you use them.  Download from the link posted above.
