Standard 4 gig SD card memory only partly seen by CHDK

I have a 4 gig SD not sdhc Data Mine card that works in my Canon A540 (released 2006).  CHDK tells me that there is abt 1.2 gig available (the memory available prompt under misc).  The regular camera menu visible below the CHDK menu says I have 3.7 gig available.  Windows Explorer also finds 3.7 gig with CHDK loaded.

In camera it formats as 32.  I used Cardtricks to reformat as 16.  I can't figure out how to make two partitions with Cardtricks (32/16). If that would make any difference.

Is there a way I can use CHDK on my 4 gig card and have access to the full 3.7 gig?

Or might the CHDK 1.2 gig feedback be incorrect?

CHDK might be misreporting the memory size - the A540 is a very old port.   Feel free to ignore what CHDK says - your camera will use all the SD card space that it thinks is available to store pictures regardless of what CHDK reports.

Update :  just looked at my camera - there is no "memory available" prompt on the Miscellaneous Menu.  There is a "Show Memory Info" but that tells me how much computer memory is available inside the camera.  It has nothing to do with space available on the SD card.

How much space does the OSD tell you is available on your SD card ?  (you might have to edit the OSD settings to see that).

I may be okay.  As I tried to say, the OSD for my 4 gig card shows 3.7 gig, while the chdk menu "show memory info" states 1083932 bits.   If as you suggest that is just programming space, then there is no disagreement.

So if the memory remains stable, I will have twice the normal storage for my A540.

Any number of camera stores have told me that the maximum standard sd card size is 2 gig.

I think you can safely assume that I am right about that one ...

The 1083932 bits mentioned above can be useful to CHDK but does not give you more picture storage space.

The A540 does not support SDHC  (as noted here : http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/A540 )  but depending on the web site I look at,  there may actually be a  4G capacity limit of an SD card rather than a 2G limit ( http://www.diffen.com/difference/SD_Card_vs_SDHC ) ( http://www.ehow.com/about_6304445_flash-memory_-sd-vs_-sdhc.html ) ( http://www.buzzle.com/articles/sdhc-card-vs-sd-card.html )

So if CHDK and your camera are happy to report 4G from a 4G SD card then have fun with it !
