I guess my thinking is that any feature not currently included in the stock SX50 firmware is a new feature
Stock Canon firmware ?  Or CHDK software ?

You can get a list of CHDK features from the wiki ... although new things keep getting added so the wiki can be a bit behind.   The CHDK philosophy seems to be "the documentation is always a bit out-of-date, so load the hack and try it for yourself".   If you want to help update documentation you will be welcome too.

I wait anxiously for the final result. For me, one big feature of the CHDK is extending the longer shutter speeds to 64 seconds.
A patch to request that the sx50 be included in the autobuild was posted tonight.

Did the posted test releases work correctly and allow you to get a 64 second exposure ?

I guess the question is what else needs to be done or tested on the SX50?
The SX50's status was changed to BETA last night and it has been added to the autobuild for general release.

That's good news. Thanks a lot for working on it. I've been doing a lot of time lapses with it lately, and really love it.

I've attached a photo which I'm pretty sure is Jupiter and one of its moons, taken at 50X zoom. I couldn't see any detail in Jupiter itself, but it may be possible with different exposure. Has anyone seen Jupiter in a telescope recently? Is this about where one of the moons is located?

Yes, that bothered me too. I just found a web site that shows the position of Jupiter's moons at a specific date and time. Strange as it seems, all the other moons were behind or in front of Jupiter at the moment I took that picture. It says that the visible moon was Callisto.

So it looks like the SX50 can photograph the moons of Jupiter. I'll try it again if the sky ever clears up again here. Now I'll have to try Saturn.

Or a bit of dust on your sensor?

Ye of little faith!

Actually, I was using the time lapse script to take that picture, so I have 50 more pictures of Jupiter with the "spec of dust" in the same relative position with Jupiter. Knowing now that the other moons were all behind Jupiter, and Callisto was where I saw the "speck", I'm pretty confidant that was Jupiter and Callisto. If I can do it again with more moons visible, I'll be sure. Plus, I have a chance to see the rings of Saturn, I think.

The sx50 continues to impress me.  The one I have access to just came back from Central America with some amazing bird photos.  To actually see the rings of Saturn (or some other convenient dust mote) would absolutely take the cake.

Are you interpolating hot pixels? Could that have wiped out a moon or two? :) badpixel.bin? :)

Still a cool shot, lapser. Go for Saturn now!

Fifty pix from a time lapse script would tend to assure that any moons transited across any bad pixels ?
