Are you interpolating hot pixels? Could that have wiped out a moon or two? :) badpixel.bin? :)

Still a cool shot, lapser. Go for Saturn now!
I had dark frames off, and shooting jpg, not raw. The SX50 has native raw anyway, which I'll try when I'm seriously looking for Jupiter's moons.

But all the moons but Callisto really were behind Jupiter when I took the picture. Go to this link and plug in 04/03/2013 at 05:00 UT

Jupiter has more than one moon. Where r d other ones? Was it cloudy?
Cool shot! :)

Yes, that bothered me too. I just found a web site that shows the position of Jupiter's moons at a specific date and time. Strange as it seems, all the other moons were behind or in front of Jupiter at the moment I took that picture. It says that the visible moon was Callisto.

So it looks like the SX50 can photograph the moons of Jupiter. I'll try it again if the sky ever clears up again here. Now I'll have to try Saturn.

It sure can.  Got this shot a couple of weeks ago.

Thanks for the link, lapser. Great information.
I don't think I can get the same shot with my SX40HS, the
SX50HS has a better zoom. But I do enjoy the F2.7 fast lens
that comes with the SX40HS, I like it for indoor shots without
flash, and use a tiny lua script to take the shot and avoid
camera shake.

I did get once Jupiter's moons with a telescope and my A590IS,
no adapter. Just held the camera close to the telescope. The
thing with Jupiter and a small sensor is that you have to over
expose Jupiter to get the moons right. You also have to deal
with Earth's rotation which makes the moons oval.

Back to chdk, I wonder if there is a way to use Handheld NightScene, from a lua script?
That's the one that takes several fast shots and combines them to reduce shake and noise.

Back in Nov 2012 this guy got this shot on video. Jupiter with io, europa, ganymede and calista so clear with his SX50. You can even see jupiter's lines

Thanks for posting that. He was using video with the 4X digital zoom. It shows that with the right exposure, Jupiter should show up pretty well. I'll try optimizing the exposure in the future, and saving the shots as native raw files and see what I come up with.

Here's a site with a link that shows the local sun, moon, and planets rise and set times. It looks like Saturn should be visible by midnight where I am, so I'll see if I can photograph it when the sky clears up.

I tried it with my time lapse script and it works in Handheld Night Scene. You should be able to trigger shots in that mode with a script. I'm not sure all the exposure overrides will work. My script was trying to change the exposure, but I don't think the pictures were exposed correctly.

That's so helpful. We should be getting clearer image with full resolution if we dont upload to youtube as video.

The below image i linked directly from youtube default image for the above video and i'm surprise to see the great red spot of jupiter too.

Yes, that's pretty amazing. I didn't think the SX50 could do that.

Jupiter is on its way behind the sun, and getting further away and dimmer all the time. But Saturn is getting brighter, so I have high hopes of seeing some rings and moons.

The main problem with my time lapse script is over-exposure with the sky that dark. I'll try modifying it to reduce the exposure after each shot, and save Canon raw files. I should be able to combine the images to show the moons and Jupiter each optimally exposed.

Re: SX50 HS porting thread - histogram activating at random ?
« Reply #247 on: 06 / April / 2013, 16:04:18 »
A CHDK user in the dpreview forum reported that the live histogram keeps getting enabled while he is shooting.

It is pretty easy to trigger the "histogram enable" CHDK shortcut (halfpress+up) when holding the camera normally while shooting.  But I believe that, as reported, I was also able to see the histogram becoming enabled occasionally when I'm sure I did not trigger the shortcut.

Update : As a test,  I commented out the kbd_shortcut() calls in gui_osd.c and now I no longer get random activation of the histogram.  Its almost as if the jog dial on the SX50 is so sensitive that it's false triggering even when not pressed.

I never use the shortcuts and can't remember them anyway, so it would be very useful for me to be able to disable them. I've discovered raw file save was enabled without me knowing it, and it took awhile to figure out what was happening. I did have the zebra activate on the SX50 once, without knowing why. Is that a shortcut?

This looks like it might be the place to implement shortcut disabling:
Code: [Select]
//in core/gui.c
int disable_shortcuts=1; //for testing

int gui_chdk_kbd_process()
{
    if (alt_mode_script_run()) return 0;
if(disable_shortcuts)return 0;  //   ADD THIS TO DISABLE SHORTCUTS
    // Process Shutter Half Press + BUTTON shortcuts
    gui_kbd_shortcuts();
I guess you need a new menu item to specify shortcuts are disabled. It would be more clear if it was "Enable Shortcuts" and defaulted to "Yes".

Done.  Submitting a patch now.
