I will try to answer my own question  :) I think get_dof turns out as -1 when some part of the formula turns out to be to big or < 1 (not allowed in  "basic" ?).
Post your script and someone (probably me) will take a look.

Has anyone used focus bracketing successfully with an SX50 using the latest build? I'm finding that it hasn't been fixed for my SX50 - focus bracketing crashes the camera.

When you read back through this thread, you see several issues with shooting overriides - especially in Sports and/or continuous modes.

FWIW, the SX50 is a very capable camera that now includes many features that only CHDK offered in the past.  Things like RAW, exposure bracketing (HDR) and focus bracketing.

With these additional features comes more firmware complexity than comes with earlier and/or less expensive cameras. And thus the current CHDK port does not always know how to handle all that in anything but simple P mode.  When someone gets the time, it can probably be fixed.

Meanwhile,  you already have native focus bracketing.

This is a known problem with the current "stable" release of CHDK, including the SX50.  The development version ("unstable ") has many fixes, including much better manual focus for most cameras. Your SX50 will work much better using focus in scripts although we are still working on menu focus.

Did you try putting the SX50 into Canon MF mode before using the CHDK menu settings?

yes i did set sx50 to manual focus using its keys. actually thats when it crashes. and i have to set it to manual focus for focus commands to work. other wise it just ignors the focus settings set by chdk. i've attached the crash report

set_av96 command is not working with camera. I can zoom using set_zoom(100) and set shutter speed using set_tv96(576) then why i can't set aperture with set_av96(5.6) ??

CHDK scripts cannot handle decimals. set_av96() needs an APEX96 value. You must convert F5.6 in APEX96.

set_av96(aperture_to_av96(5600))

set_av96_direct(value) done job for me. i needed 3.5, 5.0 and 8.0 apertures which i'm getting with values 350, 450 and 560 respectively
