Hi i still have not used this CHDK coz my card reader is old, unable to read SDHC. Anyone kind enough to write the Hack/improvement or release notes for this release specifically for SX50 cause the general CHDK Release notes also includes other models (i.e. RAW which is already native to SX50).

Im particularly interested to know if this CHDK improves:-

1. Sharpness - natively picture i shot not really sharp compare to prime lens DLSR, editing the sharpness of the RAW file sometimes ruins my image.

2. DOF - natively the biggest aperture is f3.4 and DOF is not shallow. Bokeh seems non existence. I read there is a DOF script included. So is there any improvement?

3. Timelapse - Miniature scene is unique and nice but landscape timelapse needs everything in the frame to be in focus. I want to know if the timelapse script in the CHDK allows timelapse in any scene or manual settings not only Miniature and do everything for you by just pressing record button. And records it in 720p like natively.

4. Timelapse - Conventional way - i want to know if the CHDK just increase exposure to 30s, auto trigger every 30" and do the timelapse video outside the camera with PC/Mac.

5. Timelapse - So if there is auto trigger, there is no need to buy remote shutter of some kind to do timelapse?

6. Video - is CHDK increase 120fps & 240fps video to at least 720p?

Thanks

In general,  CHDK cannot do anything to change the physical limits of the camera.

CHDK cannot make the lens on your camera better.  There is a reason the prime lens on a DSLR can cost more than a complete P&S camera.

CHDK cannot give your camera lens a wider f-stop.  If the camara comes with f3.4 then that's what you get.  Be aware that f3.4 on a P&S camera is equivalent to more that f16 on a dSLR.  Bokeh will be almost impossible although at extreme zoom settings you will get some background blurring.

Yes it will.

It will record at whatever picture resolution setting you have selected in the Canon menus.

Yes.

Yes - although remote shutter can be handy for other things - like keeping the camera still.  The CHDK remote shutter can be built for a few dollars (or for free if you can a switch and battery from something else: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/USB_Remote_V2

No

I wonder if you're in perfect focus with ISO 100.

The best CHDK capable camera for sharpness is the G1X, with it's large sensor and quite capable 5X zoom lens. The SX50 is a super zoom that also does very close macro. That's it's main strength.

Try zooming in from a little further back. The DOF gets very shallow very fast.

CHDK is incredibly flexible for time lapse, which is what I've been experimenting with for the past few months. These 2 examples demonstrate time lapse on the G1X:

Might make more sense to post your SX50 examples here in the SX50 porting thread ?

Good point. I was trying to show the increased sharpness of the G1X compared to the SX50 because of the larger, more sensitive sensor, and the capabilities of CHDK to do time lapse. Here's a few of my SX50 favorites:

Thanks Waterwingz for the reply im still looking forward to try this CHDK out when my card reader arrives. And thanks a lot for the bokeh tips, i finally can capture this shots.

Lapser, nice timelapse video, regarding the sharpeness i usually use Ken Burns effect in Final Cut Pro to reduce of the blur part and pan/zoom the miniature timelapse video

[HD] Canon SX50 HS Time Lapse

So after this i dont to do that already. Thanks to both of you

<<< post edited by accident and original destoyed ..... ouch>>

IIRC,  I was looking for the cause of the crash in Sports mode and narrowed it down to where
"BL      capt_seq_hook_set_nr\n"
is inserted in capt_seq.c.

If I deleted the
#define NR_AUTO (0)
at the start of the file the crash in Sports mode goes away.  Apparently the SX50 does not like the *nrflag value forced to 0 in Sports mode.

Then I came to the conclusion that Dark Frame Subtraction override does not work at all and requested confirmation from others.

Can anyone confirm that they can actually disable dark frame subtraction with the current build?
You're right. Dark frame subtraction isn't disabled with the CHDK menu option for the SX50. I suspect there's a wrong address for nrflag? If that's the case, correcting the address might fix the sports mode crash as well.

I didn't notice it with my time lapse routines because I've been using continuous drive mode. In that mode, I discovered that dark frame subtraction never occurs. It may be a way to disable dark frames without CHDK? I'll have to experiment with it a little more, in the SX50 and other cameras.

Dark frame only kicks in when the exposure goes beyond about 5 seconds.  Do you every get that far out with your continuous drive mode ?

Yes, I just tested it at 20 seconds, and it didn't do dark frames in continuous mode. My script also runs in single shot, and it DID do dark frames then, even with dark frames set to OFF in the CHDK menu.

I did a time lapse at Crater Lake of the ISS. I think the shutter time was around 8 seconds (didn't save a log, but I was watching the screen log). The video demonstrates that dark frames were OFF since the white lines of the ISS don't have gaps between frames (starting at about 2:00):

[EDIT] Also, dark frame subtraction starts when the exposure time goes over 1 second. The camera also sets the ISO to 80 (minimum).
