Poop.

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I need one of the 1.02a-ers to post the exact button sequence they used to induce the crash, and a detailed description of each screen leading up to the crash.  This will keep me from having to go through all of the code for a third time, instead giving me an idea of where to focus.

The best thing I could ask for is a video of what's going on. Maybe one of you has a second camera?

I am totally new to CHDK and this forum.

I was able to boot off of the latest build posted by TPC on my SD750 (1.02a) chdk_sd750_102a_10may08_0953.zip. I was able to navigate through the menus, etc. I didn't come across any crashes or such. Sorry, but what am I supposed to do next? How can I take the pictures after I have set some options in the menu?

but are you using the ALT menus?

Hey now, this is good news.

Right, if you got into the menus that means you should see "<ALT>", white letters in a blue box, at the bottom of the screen.  Just hit the print button (upper right corner on back of camera) until this blue box goes away, and then mash the shutter button. Hit the print button again to get it back, Display to get back into the menu... yeah.

If you don't see <ALT> at the bottom of the screen, and you didn't see a blue box with CHDK information in it at startup, and there's no battery meter, then CHDK isn't really running.

Let me know how it turns out.

In order to troubleshoot this problem, I need one of the 1.02a-ers to post the exact button sequence they used to induce the crash, and a detailed description of each screen leading up to the crash.

Here's how I load the CHDK:

( 1 ) press play
( 2 ) press menu
( 3 ) roll down to "Firm Update", press func set
( 4 ) Update firmware version? 1.0.2.0 -> 1.0.1.1 with OK (aka right, func. set)

Crash it:

( 5 ) press print button (the ALT menu appears)
( 6 ) press MENU (this one actually makes the difference - without this it runs without problems)
( 7 ) press func. set (the script menu appears)
( 8 ) press print button (the CHDK crashes)

If you need the video of this, I might try to make one.

Can't wait for this one to have the lightning script up and running with this in the next thunderstorm. Thanks! :)

@TPC
Yes, I do get the CHDK splash screen. I was able to go into one of the menus and set the shutter speed to 1/80000. So, yes, CHDK is loading and running. i do see the battery meter, etc. These are the steps I did:

(1) Start the camera in play back mode.
(2) Press the Menu buton.
(3) Scroll to the bottom of the menu and select "Firm update"
(4) The display shows: "update firmware version? 1.0.2.0 -> 1.0.1.1"
(5) Select OK button
(6) The firmware loads and a blue/white splash screen shows up:
       CHDK Firmware 'albest' #59
       Build May 10 2008 09:53:04
       Camera: ixus75_sd750 - 1.02a
(7) The splach screen disappears and battery meter etc. shows up.
There is also a number representing free memory, I guess
There is a solid bar at the screen bottom, almost half across the screenwidth
(8) Press the print button. The text <ALT> appears at the screen bottom
(9) Press DISP button.
(10) The main menu appears. and screen bottom says <CNF>
(11) Scroll through the menu by pressing UP/DOWN
(12) Press RIGHT / FUNC.SET to enter a menu item on level inside
(13) Also, press RIGHT / LEFT / FUNC.SET to change the item value.

In carrying out the above steps to my heart's contents, I didn't come across any crash. There is one confusing point though: after having gotten to the Main Menu, if you press the DOWN, the menu disappears. Actually, what has happened is the it has scrolled to the bottom - just press the UP, the it will be back.

I am still clueless as to how to exit the Main Menu and actually take the pictures after setting the menu options. I guess I need to read the CHDK manual or something.

@solarflare

Yes, I was able to duplicate the crash using the steps you mentioned.

Ok, I got it: Press the shutter button as TPC mentioned to enter the picture taking mode after setting the menu options.

Yes, I was able to duplicate the crash using the steps you mentioned.

After formatting my 4 GB Kingston SDHC card with CardTricks v1.27, copying the files and making the card bootable with the application, the startup stops being a pain during the crash hunting process. I highly recommend it to the others having the SD750 1.02a as well.

The CHDK autoloads when the card is write protected. Very cool. Now I only need to find a proper lightning script and place it somewhere in the SDHC card.

Here's another bug. If I try to change the RAW setting for instance, it crashes so that the lens is left out:

( 1 ) Power on (with the CardTricks formatted card CHDK autoloads)
( 2 ) print button
( 3 ) disp, roll down to RAW parameters -> and press func. set
( 4 ) press timer (aka down) and func. set to select Save RAW
( 5 ) roll down to <- Back and press func. set
( 6 ) press disp (the CHDK crashes with lens not getting retracted)

I think I have come across a little crash, but I could be wrong as I don't know well fiddling with CHDK:

(1) Load CHDK
(2) After the splash screen appears, press shutter to enter picture taking mode.
(3) Enter <ALT> mode by pressing printer button
(4) Press DISP to show menu
(5) Enter some menu and change setting. I changed Shutter Speed to 1/80000
(6) Press Printer button to go back to picture taking mode
(7) The screen goes blank and camera is left in off state - lens sticking out. Requires switch on to do anything further with it.
