That's too bad - the posted link praises the function for not doing that. Hopefully its just a G12 issue ?
All G series with optical viewfinder do this.
Once the screen is turned off, by closing it or with the Disp button, the camera reverts to AF.
I suspect Canons logic is that there is no way to focus with the optical viewfinder so MF is not needed.
