Go to parent folder functionality missing in script loading screen

Hello,

My DreamPC broke down so I went to my mothers place to download chdk for the first time and try it out on my PowerShot SX 50 HS.

It worked. I downloaded a time-lapse script and stored it on the sd card. I tested it, it works.

I come home and decide to explore what other scripts exists. I navigate to the "exam" folder via the script loading screen. It's now stuck in this "exam" folder.

When I press left it gives a context menu, instead of going back up to the parent folder ?!

I tried every possible button to navigate back up to the parent folder, nothing seems to work.

I tried turning off/on but it goes back to the exam folder.

I tried using the file browser but that dont change the script loading screen.

I am very angry about this because now I cannot use the time lapse script which is inside parent folder (one folder up the tree if you wish).

Pretty stupid that this navigating functionality is missing ?!?!?!?!?!  Yes even for free software. Simply big design mistake. Please fix and all is forgiven.

For now I can only think of one solution. Using the file browser to delete or move the exam folder so it's nuked.

Also the ads on this website are slowing down my back up computer. Are these ads really necessary ? ;)

(Cut back on the ads at least a little bit ? No need for  the same ad on top and bottom).

Hopefully tomorrow my DreamPC will be fixed.

A pissed off and annoyed
  Skybuck.

*** UPDATE ***

Ok, I found a nice work around, since there is a copy & past context menu, I copied counter.bas to the exam folder, so at least now the script can be loaded again, which makes me really happy ! ;) =D

If the motherboard doesn't arrive, then at least I can play with the camera/time lapse future ! Looking really forward to it ! ;) =D

Bye,
  A happy Skybuck ! ;) =D

Do you see the top entry in the file list labelled ".."?

What happens if you select it?

Phil.

No, none of the file browsers show the "..".

Since the PowerShot SX50 HS is still new and the chdk kit for it is also still in alpha/beta, maybe it's just a bug, or maybe the PowerShot SX50 HS works slightly different ?

At least the file browser resets always to root folder, so that allowed me to navigate down the tree and perform the copy & paste.

Also maybe this information below will shine some more light on this issue:

1. SD Card used is:SanDisk Extreme SDXC (45 MB/s) 128 GB.
2. I did not format the card, just used it, format didn't seem necessary ?

Not really sure why anyone would want to spend any of their freely given personal time looking for the problem after reading this ...

I will give you a good reason that will shut you up: Because it can happen to the developer as well.

I am sure he will be happy with this bug/scenerio report and will be more than happy to fix it, if he/she can figure out what causes it in the first place !

And figuring out these kinds of weird bugs is fun !

I wasn't commenting on the bug report.  That's fine - there are a lot of those and sometime we can even fix some of them.

But calling the developer stupid and telling him that he made a big design mistake is not polite.

I've always been able to navigate up and down folders with my two cameras, so you appear to be the only one who has the problem. The two possibilities are it's either a bug, or you're not finding and selecting the line that says "../" at the top. Is that line visible, but when you go to it and press "set" it doesn't work?

Also, my camera always defaults back to the /scripts file. I've have had some strange problems when my SD card fills up with pictures, like 1,000 or so. Do you have a lot of pictures on your card? You could try moving them to the computer and deleting them from the card, or prepare another SD card with no pictures on it.

With too many pictures on the card, the USB connection fails, even without CHDK running. The time stamps on my log files was always 12/31/2000 12:00 AM (or 1/1/2000 0000). Both problems stopped when I deleted a few GB of files off the SD card. Since the USB problem happens without CHDK, I think this is a bug in the Canon firmware, probably related to memory filling up.

And if you don't feel like an idiot, you probably haven't found the bug.

Also, my camera always defaults back to the /scripts file.

It should only do this if no script is selected. If a script is active then the script browser should go to that script automatically.

In this case OP's card would probably be formatted as exFAT, which Microsoft has
prescribed for SD cards > 32 GB.
Pretty sure CHDK will be happier running on FAT32 ...
If this applies, because Microsoft's format will not work try the program referenced here

cheers,

wim

edit: added link to fat32format for Windows
