Long time lapse on canon D10

I uploaded the CHDK for my canon D10 and successfully was able to get it to work to use the countdown intervalometer. However, I usually take long outdoor time lapses and this only lasted about 5 hours because the screen doesn't shut off between shots and I'm doing 5,10 or 15 minute intervals, or longer. My screen is already set to sleep in 1 minute, but I guess it doesn't sleep in countdown mode. Can it be programmed to do this? I also use a Pentax Optio to do these and it can go days without a battery change and no external power. I would use the power, but I'm usually in the woods and would need to rig up some kind of battery. I want to avoid leaving the camera open to the weather, with all doors closed. Is it not possible to get the D10 to do what my Pentax does? I want it to take a shot, sleep for 5 or 10 minutes, wake up and shoot again. Repeat. Any help hugely appreciated!

I'll publish testing results as I work on the post today but the script is functional and includes every trick I've learned with CHDK. Others might post some new ones too !

Unfortunately, the one things I do not know how to do is put the camera completely to sleep and wake up later. This would be a great feature but I fear needs some sort of hardware support that is not built into the Canon P&S cameras.

Thanks for sharing. I'm checking it out now. I hope it can be done. Otherwise I'll have to start thinking about external power in the woods. Please keep me up to date.

The D10 does have a display off mode, which you can assign to the print button. You can trigger this with a scripted key press immediately after shooting. That will probably give you the max power saving. I wouldn't expect miracles from this though, it's not the same as powering down the camera.

This is controlled by the "disable LCD off" setting here http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_User_Manual#Disable_LCD_Off but as mentioned above, using the key shortcut is probably better.

Ok, that's too bad. Sounds like external power is the way to go.

I just got the D10 recently, but in playing with the display button and reading the manual, I can't figure out how to get it to turn off. I think it doesn't have that feature. Is that something that CHDK can help with.

I hope more cameras will come out with this feature. The Pentax is ok, but I'd like to do aperture priority but I don't have as much control on that camera.

I have this camera, and did the CHDK port. It operates as I described.

In shooting mode, go into the canon menu. At the bottom of the first page, there is "set <print icon> button". Set that to the camera icon with zZ over it.

Now in CHDK, if you hold the print button briefly, it will go to display off mode immediately. Pressing a button will wake it up. This is not quite like the "display off" mode on cameras with an OVF, the display will wake up every time you shoot.

In a chdk script, you can click('print') to simulate pressing the print button.

Note that if you use MF, the MF setting will be lost in display off mode (edit: the camera will revert to AF). If you use focus-at-infinity mode, it will not be lost.

While CHDK allows manual control of shutter speed, ISO and f-stop, your D10 does not actually have a variable aperature (just an ND filter - that you can control with CHDK). So unfortunately aperature priority won't do you much good.
