I just received an email from Instructables that contains a 1000+ lumen MTB Light project.
A nice project but the part list comes in a little over $200.  Probably a good deal for the intended application (mountain bike) but you probably want to use a less expensive battery / power supply / charger option for a camera setup.  The LED stuff looks really interesting.

@ waterwingz,

A PIR activated camera is one of the projects sitting on my projects table.

In a hobbyist situation, where the financial resources are limited, one has to weigh up the total cost against the application. I agree with you that the LED parts list is expensive for a photographic application.

12 volt halogen lamps are probably the most cost effective lighting solution; the negative side is the power source. Determining where the total halogen cost versus the total LED cost equalise and a LED lighting solution becomes the most cost effective solution is the hard part.

I had a quick look at the links and a number of LED torch sites.

For photographic use, a number of the commercially manufactured LED torches on the market may provide a similar function to the Instructables project at a more cost effective price.

A few LED torch links that  I looked at.

Note: For anyone living in Australia; it is cheaper to purchase the products in the USA and pay for the postage than purchase the product in Australia.
