"bad magicnum" would normally mean something is corrupted, either the module files or camera memory. Try a different card or re-formatting and reinstalling. If the file were the wrong version or mission, the error would be different.

It's possible that some other bug could cause this, but if it were a generic bug in chdk code one would expect all cameras to be affected.

As always, input from other users with this camera would be helpful.

This error means that it thinks it opened the module file and read it into memory; but that something in the first 8 bytes read did not match the expected header values.

This could be the memory allocation in the function that reads the file failed - the code does not check for this properly.

Under the Miscellaneous menu there should be a 'Show Memory Info' option - run that and see what it shows for Free Memory.

I've attached a test version that includes more error checking - try this and post back the error message.

Lots of free memory - forgot to write it down :-[ . Installed the test image with LICKS now the camera won't turn on. I think the battery's dead - the charger's at work. Be back tomorrow. Thanks.

Unfortunately "Lots" is a very relative term.  For small microcontroller,  4K of free memory is "lots".    For CHDK, less than 200K starts to get tight and less that 100K becomes non-functional pretty quickly.

I think it was between 200 and 300. But then thinking is relative too.  ??? I hope I'll be able to find out tomorrow. Really appreciate all the help, BTW.

If the camera won't turn on, that could also be caused by trying to load a CHDK version that isn't compatible with your camera, or CHDK crashing on boot for some other reason. This can crash in such a way that you need to briefly remove the battery to actually get the camera to boot normally again, even if CHDK is disabled.

To quickly disable CHDK autoboot, you can just unlock the SD card.

I think I killed it. The battery's fully charged and it doesn't even try to turn on. Is there maybe some sort of trick button pressing incantation I could try to bring it back to life?

Woah!! I just got it to turn on by holding the shutter release half way down while pushing the on button. But with no card installed. I'm going to experiment. Back soon.  ???

It's working!  :xmas  I redid the card with LICKS and the .....2361 build and it all works. Thanks again for the help and advise.
