Mac - CHDK and a 720is

Hi all.

Since I got my new A720is last week, I have been trying in vain to get the firmware onto my camera.

By some miracle today i finally downloaded the firmware, but now I am stuck.  The instructions for making the SD card bootable on a mac are ok, but they really rely on knowing exactly where to go and what to do.

I have downloaded and installed Darwin ports, but when I type the commands as said in the FAQ my terminal just tells me it is a bad command or it doesn't exist and i can't hex edit the sd card to make it bootable.

Has anyone on here made an SD card bootable? if so, could they write a simple idiots guide to doing it as i feel i am missing something vital out.

As I say, I am up to the stage of installing Darwin ports, and unmounting my SD card and that's it.

Any help would be great.  I see so many examples of what people are doing with their fully featured cameras and I really want to join in.  I so want to use the remote USB control, time lapse and RAW functions.

Mel

Hi guys, I am on a mac, running tiger 10.4.11
all you need is the unarchiver program

The Unarchiver

use that program to unzip it and you should be fine.

So, I consider myself relatively technical, and I actually did get Darwin ports hexedit up and running (there are a ton of missing instructions on the wiki ... I'm going to need to go back and edit them).

HOWEVER ... as far as I can see, if you have a > 2GB card (I have a 4GB), then getting it to work on a Mac is going to be very hard. The trick is in making these cards "bootable", and I haven't found any reliable way to get this work, including advanced stuff like making 2 partitions using Disk Utility on your SD card. Ouch...

I may have to see about getting a small SD card just to see if I can get it working reliably on that, and then go from there. If anyone finds utilities for making SD cards bootable on the Mac, let us know...

Well... I've been trying to get the S5IS loaded up since it came out. I've installed Darwin Ports and HexEdit.

When I type (per the wiki):
sudo hexedit disk2s1

All I get is:
hexedit: disk2s1: Not a file.

Any ideas? I am trying this on my 2Gb card.

I just wrote up very long instructions on my blog here: Getting CHDK working on the Canon S5 IS from Mac OS X | B. Mann Consulting

So, if you are getting "not a file", it means that you missed a step: you need to UNmount the partition -- then you should be able to edit with hexedit.

Please let me know if my instructions work for you.

It's not very good etiquette to direct someone to a commercial site for information from a free open-source project.

Eh? That's my personal website, it's not commercial (other than having Google Ads on it). I'm an open source evangelist (among other things), so it's not like I don't get those aspects. I added the link because I just finished it and know the pain that Mac users are going through :P

As I said on that page, I still need to go back and edit the wiki pages (and create an account and so on), and I'm hoping to get to that later this week.
