The acronym "PEBKAC" was new to me. Maybe you're right and I should have found by myself. But maybe my question/ annotations (being a newbie) points to some weaknesses/ trapfalls?
I was answering your question about whether the problem was the camera, CHDK or you. Was intended to be humorous rather than a slight but when I look again at the definitions I linked, they are somewhat negative. I apologize for that.
As far as your initial troubles, it's one of the common things people miss when first using CHDK. That's why its explained in a big blue info box at the very start of the CHDK manual :
http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_1.2.0_User_Manual#CHDK_Main_MenuThere is another acronym that often comes up here : RTFM. But to be honest I never read manuals either unless I can't figure things out by trial & error.
The macro focus adjustment setting menu item is actually kind of unique - most numeric fields default the adjustable digit being the right most one. Newbies sometimes complain about having to press the "up" button hundreds or thousands of times to enter long exposure times (for example).
If you have a better suggestion about how it might be possible to adjust numeric fields given the limited number of keys on the camera, we would be interested. Maybe some combination of keys where you press "Func/Set" once to enter an edit mode where the left & right buttons move between digits and up & down change the digits. Press "Func/Set" again to lock in the value. Not sure that's any better for a newbie though - how would they know to use "Func/Set" in the first place?
