Need installation help: SX260

I'm grateful for the immediate help I got yesterday on finding the version number. My camera has the latest version listed in the FAQ: 1.01a. I have explored all available menus and cannot find the item "firm update". I started the camera with the "play" button as instructed.

Did you copy the files from a Mac? If so, check http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ/Mac#Still_Having_Trouble.3F
Don't forget what the H stands for.

Or use my STICK app - downloads and installs CHDK simply and quickly.

Using alternate installation methods is not solving my problem. After reading the section on "Mac problems" I downloaded "The Unarchiver" and used it to expand the .zip file: sx260hs-101a-1.1.0-2461-full_ALPHA (1).zip

I did a "low level" format of the SD card in the camera. I then put the card in my reader and put the CDHK folder and the PS.FI2 file at the root level of the card. I returned the card to the camera, turned it on with the Play button, hit "menu" and scrolled through all menus. As in many previous tries, "firm update" was not present.
Help!!!!! What did I do wrong?

There should be 5 files in the root folder, plus the CHDK folder. Are you sure all 5 were in there? You definitely need DISKBOOT.BIN

With the camera off, press and hold the play button until it starts. You have to be in play mode, where you review pictures you've taken.

With the camera in play mode, press the menu button, and then the UP key. That's where firmware update is. It's right below TRANSITION. If you don't see firmware update, then you didn't start in PLAY mode, or you don't have all the files on the card.

I hope this helps. Keep trying, and you'll get it.

Once CHDK is running after you find and select FIRMWARE UPDATE, press the play button to enter and exit <ALT> mode. In <ALT> mode, press menu/Misc./SD Card/Make Card bootable. Then turn off the camera, take out the SD card and slide the write protect tab to protected. Put in the card, and it should load CHDK every time it boots.  Good luck!

If he is trying to use the "firmware update" method,  then the only file needed in the root directory is the ps.fi2 file.  You do not need three of the other four at all.  And the diskboot.bin is only needed for the "SD Card Lock" autoboot method.

Thanks for the correction. I was trying to verify that he had installed CHDK correctly, and included instructions for making the card bootable at the end.

On Windows 7, I discovered that I don't have to unzip the file. I just double click the zip file; press control+A, then control+C to copy all files in the zip to the clipboard; go to the SD card root directory, and press control+V to paste all the files to the card. You have to confirm twice that you want to overwrite the old files if CHDK is already on the card.

It's the same as right clicking the zip, choosing Extract All, and browsing to the SD card root directory, which also works.

I'm trying to walk before I can run. A friend thought my problem was using an 8G card. So, today, I bought a 4G card. I did a fresh download of DHSK for my SX260 firmware version 1.01a. I did not want to try making the card bootable until I saw that things would work with "firmware update method". I expanded the download with "The Unarchiver". To check that there were no unwanted flags, I did an "ls" in terminal (I'm on a Mac) and saw that the items: CDHK and PS.FI2 did not have the "@" flag at their end. So every thing should have been kosher, but when I put that card in the camera, started with "play" and searched the two menus, there was no "firm update" item. I just can't believe this. I've gone through every damn step repeatedly, it's a camera model and firmware version on the CDHK list--in fact, here is a copy and paste of the download file name: sx260hs-101a-1.1-2.0-2461-full_ALPHA. So, will some kind soul tell me what the hell is going on.

I'm sure your friend was trying to help,  but he doesn't seem to know a lot about CHDK.  4G or 8G card - makes no difference.  But now you have a spare card so its not all for nothing.

Given the problems you are having,  it might be better to just try the "firmware update method" ?

Well,  there is no CDHK file but there is a CHDK folder.  I assume that's what you meant.

Is that really a copy & paste ?  Because when I look at the dowload page, there is no sx260hs-101a-1.1-2.0-2461-full_ALPHA.   The current version is  a sx260hs-101a-1.1.0-2474-full_ALPHA.zip.  Which would have been sx260hs-101a-1.1.0-2461-full_ALPHA.zip when you downloaded.

Some cameras do not support "firmware update" booting.   But according to the porting thread :
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?topic=7889
many people have booted an sx260 using that method.  So it can be done.

Time to ask some other obvious questions I guess.  How did you start the camera in "play" ?  Did you first press the button with the blue triangle inside the blue square that is in the middle of the right hand side of the camera. Or did you press the On/Off button first ?

The FIRM UPDATE menu item is usually the last one on the first menu that appears when you press Play to start the camera and then immediately press the Menu button.  You should be able to just use the jog dial /  key to scroll  to it.

Finally. when you said
Quote
and saw that the items: CDHK and PS.FI2 did not have the "@" flag at their end
did you mean the @ flag was not there like it is in this dump :

Code: [Select]
[email protected]  1 <username>  <username>   127664 10 Dec 02:17 DISKBOOT.BIN  com.apple.quarantine        38
  [email protected]  1 <username>  <username>   128412 10 Dec 02:17 PS.FIR com.apple.quarantine        38
rather than at the end of the filename ?

It's worth pointing out that if you use ACID to download a build on a Mac, it expands the zip file for you in a way which guarantees the files can be simply copied to the card - no problems with hidden Mac gotchas.
