Hi All,

Just wanted to show off a quick project which in total has taken me about 1 hour from setup to post...

Following on from the high speed sync/sink thread I was inspired to try capturing drips in action (infact, i'm now obsessed!).  Technical setup was A570IS on a tripod over my sink, filled a black wash bowl with water, made the tap drip slow which created a still water surface and large drops.  Set the shutter speed to 1/50000, flash to 1/3 power (taken with no light but day light around 6pm).  Zoomed in to full 4x zoom with no additional lens.  Manual focus to the 'drip zone', f=8 and was even lazy (edit: chdk smart) to set an interval script off to keep on clicking.

Also had it taking RAW, the only thing slowing the camera down was the flash recharge.  Came back after 10 mins and sifted through loads of 'ok', 'cool', 'wow's!!' and pics of just still water to settle on this image for a nice desktop bg:



JPEG was dark due to low flash, ISO=100 and low shutter speed and because that was kind of what I was after, but as I shot in RAW was able to use DNG4PS to import it into Photoshop - jig around with it to something lighter I liked.

As this was going to be a desktop wallpaper, I wasn't too fused about the realism of the colours, so went for a cool blue, faded it around the edges and came up with this..



I like it, and am impressed by myself that I can produce a wallpaper that I would happily download from Google and use, so to speak!!  Did my little camera really do that!?!

Well, I hope you like it, feel free to copy it, I also did a version for 1280x1024 which I can host if someone is after it for a 19" screen.  I hope this inspires you to try it yourself and have fun!!

(P.S. Don't use a mini tripod balanced on shiney wet draining boards... an early attempt saw my A570 go for a dive!!  :'(.  Was only a tiny bit of water, but the screen seemed to get water behind it.. that was a cold sweaty night waiting for the LCD to dry out.  Alls well now though, phew!!! Will never leave my camera dangling over water again... durrr!!)

Very nice.
They usually use 3D-rendering technique to achieve such results.

Nice indeed, you've got the classical sphere drop with a nice spark on it.

IMO, it could benefit of a little clockwise straighten and not so little cropping (get rid of the upper an left black area).

But as you said you like it for desktop wallpaper cropping is limited. May be your current composition would fit a PC desptop with the icons on the dark areas.

I bet you are not the first one to send the camera for a swim.

How do you know that I also gave my lens a bath while shooting from 1cm distance?
I almost gave panic() a run, (ok to say the truth: I did.), I had colored water, not very nice. :'( :blink:
So I shaked the camera with lens down, then removed the batterys(lens was still out), and put it overnight into a box
with silica gel.
Runs still nicely, since Dezember 07 I didn't try again... :D

So perhaps *metasearch* would help, but what is "PETA"?
I now also use some bag, but I don't have any filters, so I used a 1cm glass,... The quality isn't as bad as expected, but  :'(

So I use it without anything now. Ahm if you need some sand from North Queensland/Australia,
tell me how to get it out form behind my front lens :(
Any ideas?(I don't want to remove the lens the soft ::) way with a saw and then use some old fixed focal lenght lenses...LOL)

I also think like that now, I saved enough money for new cameras now, but I won't through it into the camera producers mouth.
I bought a710 to have more possibilitys of controlling the camera, and that's what I got.
(Powering off the LCD is really useful for learning as a newbe who tried to get something out of "lochcamera"->"holecamera" and a totaly automatic fujifilm finepix a204 [kept A-Series LOL]) No, when I had discoverd all canon-features for me, I discovered CHDK and got a whole new set of untried options ;).

The small pieces of sand(if they really are), are just like the sounds of supertelemacro: disgusting.
I get that bad kind of feeling in my stomach and I want to buy a new one(no organ transplatation, camera), hoping to get better images with better camera, somehow the ads did a good job with me.

So my next pc will come in let's say 4 years, a camera 6years.
I mean a pc should work for 10 years at last, and a cam shouldn't get tired in the tryout phasis of 8 years. ::)
(Maybe that's why I like the old heavy metal cased cams of my father: You can't destroy them equal how you try to.)
So I won't panic about the dirt as I didn't before discovering it.

So I hate German-essays, but I can let some philosophy out without falling asleep.

You know I was looking at it tonight on my desktop and though... oh cr@p... it's not straight!! ha ha!  Also I put in the dark areas on purpose for the effect.  The captured image took most of the frame, I just off centered, as you said - so my icons has a dark bg to sit on!!
