Can I ask language-related question here? ;)

What's the difference between "Maybe" and "May be"? I'm asking because some people here use one form, other people - another.
Maybe they both are correct?  May be a misunderstanding here?

Maybe some people just like to use "may be", though it may be that they prefer "maybe". I think it really depends on the context, "may be" is used more like a verb while "maybe" is an adverb. I don't think it's allowed to spell the adverbial form with a space, so those cases may be typos. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I'm not a native english speaker.
