When one if frustrated as heck, it's human nature to want to give up. If I wanted complexity I'd be using an Android phone not an iPhone
I don't buy Apple products.  I don't like manufacturers who limit my choices to their preferences.  CHDK is worth every penny you paid for it and we offer full refunds at any time you are not satisfied.

I didn't read the part about overrides until you mentioned it.
Well ... what can I say ?

1 minute is fine.
You will probably want to look into "dark frame subtraction" on this forum.

I don't understand what they mean by Half Shutter + Up.
Its one of the "features" of CHDK that many people seem to want - you press the shutter button half way down (as if you are setting exposure / focusing) and then press the "Up" position on the function wheel on the back of your camera.  Its a "shortcut" method of turning on&off overrides - there are other shortcuts too.

I find them completely unusable, confusing and prone to causing strange errors when you least expect them.  I submitted a patch that disables them in recent versions.

Just use the CHDK menus to set things up the way you want.  Go to the Enhanced Photo Operations menu, and use the Tv override.   The menu system in the development 1.2.0 version of CHDK is much easier to use by the way.

Unless you created the sticky, not much. It would've been nice to to see in the beginning that this a feature.

That's what I thought it meant, but I couldn't get the overrride to work. It is extremely difficult to do both things at the same time.  You have to be very multidextrous to accomplish that. So I have to agree the feature is useless.  I have no idea where the   Enhanced Photo Operations menu is

Also I think I encountered a few bugs with the CHDK. When you turn on the camera you have to press the shutter button to get to the take a picture mode. Pressing the arrow or playback button doesn't do that. I found that very frustrating earlier today.  That would require some retraining to get the hang of that, which I am now able to do.

However, the biggest bug, at least I think it is a bug is how the overexposure area  (red) display works sometimes and most of the time not. I found if I reinstalled STICK it works for a short bit. And yes, the memory card is locked. Like you wrote earlier, it's like magic that the SX50 can reformat the SDcard with the protection mode ON

Right now, I am giving up. Maybe I'll come back toward the end of the year and see what improvements have been made.

Thanks for your patience and help.

My point was that you need to do some reading on your own.  This is a "fun" project but it takes work on your part too.

Well, if you haven't figured out how to activate the CHDK menus and enable the things CHDK can do for you then you are probably not going to get much out of this.

If you hold down the power button until the you hear the lens extend, you can bypass this.  It was originally done as a "safety" thing to prevent the lens from extending in your camera bag if you accidentally press the on/off button.  Google "lens error" if you want to understand the breadth of the problem (not CHDK related) - this is actually a good feature.

Well,  given your unfamiliarity with how to use CHDK,  this will take some patient debugging to see what you have found.

Seems more likely that you are changing CHDK setup each time - reloading via STICK just resets that.

Unrelated to your issues.

We will probably still be here :) And CHDK will most likely work pretty much like you see it now with a few more features and the occasional bug fix.  Sorry.

That's a real pity. Part of my "non entertainment" activities ie. work is to rewrite poorly written manuals, directives, processes, and procedures. Sounds like your stickies and instructions need my "expertise". :P

Well,  its a hacker community working for free.  While we do what we can for the newbs,  its one of those "laws of diminishing returns".  So people sort of self select - those willing to study, read, puzzle things out and experiment get value from the hack.  The rest move on to something easier.  As they were never likely to contribute much its no loss - harsh as that might sound.

Awesome - go for it !

I've rewritten a ton of stuff to reflect the ongoing changes (it seems I'm at exactly 2000 wiki edits today by chance).   Most of the user manuals are somewhat to very "out of date". CHDK was merged into a common version back around 2010 and its since gone through three major revision  (1.0.0 ,  1.1.0, 1.2.0 ) each with different UI's and functionality.    And as Canon releases new cameras more things change.

Have at it - please!

Indeed, it's a hacker community much like XDA. Fortunately, people like you don't have the same bad attitude as they do there  :D

I don't mind helping with a rewrite as long as I have the time and the info is correct to begin with (garbage in garbage out).  But that doesn't seem to be the case here. For example, I was able to find where the Enhanced Photo Operations menu is. You folks decided to use the <ALT> key or aka  the print button function to gain access to it. Right off the top, when someone hovers over the <ALT> they should be able to see a link to what this really is.  Personally, I never would've referred to the PRINT button as ALT, but whatever. The instructions on how to enable 1 minute of long exposure doesn't work for me (Revision B). The screen images in the WIKI are not the same as on chdk for the Canon SX50.  This DISABLE override layout and all the other Adding a calendar and games to the camera makes me smfh.

I spent a good two, three hours, playing with the settings, rebooting, reinstalling Stick, copying the firmware last night. I finally give up. Things do not need to be this complicated.  I believe keeping things simple is more when it comes to applications and features. Then again, I am not a hacker and I can't afford to spend this much time to find out how to do a very basic simple task like increasing the shutter speed. Ultimately, the instructions were wrong or unclear.

All the best everyone.

Here's a hint - if you need help with something specific,  its usually best to ask for exactly that rather than vent your frustration.

Here's a couple of screen shots from my G10 using version 1.1.0 and 1.2.0 of CHDK.  Once set this way, you exit the <ALT> menu and shoot normally.  The exposure time will be one minute (I tested both).

Like I said before, much of the documentation is out of date. If you are going to help,  being able to ask good questions and puzzle out what the system currently does is the minimal requirement. That's just the way it is.

Its called the "ALT" button because its the button you press to enter the <ALT> mode (or alternative menu mode) that CHDK provides.  Many cameras do not have a Print button so different buttons are used. The use lf the word ALT makes the instructions generic once you get the hang of it.

FWIW - there is no "hover" function on a Canon camera keypad so suggesting things that are physically impossible to do is not going to help much.

See the start of this post  (and I assume that rev B refers to the firmware version of your camera 1.00B ?  CHDK release version numbering is currently either 1.0.0,  1.1.0,  or 1.2.0 )

People work on what interests them - especially in the early days.

Why in the world did you reinstall Stick?  Once you have CHDK loaded on your camera you are done with that step.

We had somebody posting here a year ago who believed he could provide simple and clear instructions about how to load CHDK.  Here's the result : http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_quick_install_Guide  - only somewhat useful for a single camera model and for people using Windows.  He didn't come back.
