Mini-tripods...

A bit offtopic, but:
What experience do you have with this mini-tripods?
I only have one fullsize velbon, so it's not very handy as I often reach my spots with my bike.
Or do you think that these rice-bags are better?

Thanks for any shared experiences!

I got one of those crapy mini-tripods

Always with me when going out biking.

Bad for HDR (may be witha remote), good for self-portraits or night shots.

Better than nothing.

I see I'll have to get one of these mini ones.
@Barney Five, I read about that one, but can hardly remember it.  I guess for hdr lines are not sufficent. For me at least ;).

I didn't hear of these ones that can be fixed on a tree. That would be really useful as trees are everywhere.

And I'll also try to switch of IS, otherwise my "don't touch, don't move philosophy" won't work as I see. :D

Search Google/eBay for Gorillapod tripod... they bend and grip to anything... Not got ont yet, but they look more diverse than a 'static' three legged mini tripod.

had one of these in my hands yesterday, come in two sizes, one small for compact cams, one for dslrs and s3is with converters :D they seemed pretty tough and are kinda laced with rubber so they really should stick to everything.

Hmpf, nice, but only available form china, don't like that.
Seems that I'll have to build it on my own.

I have the similar one:

Mine has plastic "head". :) But this head is better than metal one, because you can adjust the strain of head locking, e.g. you can change level/angle of the camera without the risk of camera pecking.

It even can hold this monster: :D

About Gorillapod(s)... I bought the Gorillapod Original, which should be capable of carrying 275g. My A710IS weighs about 271g fully loaded, but, alas, that is too much for that pod. On the other hand, the tripod mount on the camera is at the extreme left, not in the middle. So I bought the SLR-ZOOM (biggest) and equipped it with a ballhead. Perhaps the Gorillapod SLR might have been sufficient, though... :] Even the biggest Gorillapod fits in my pocket. (Barely, but still... :] The (cargo) pants are self-made :], patterns some Mercy Transformer -adaptation. Pockets are, well, not huge, but adequate.)
I haven't photographed that much, but the 'pod seems quite nice and versatile. Don't know, how long the joints will eventually last. Hopefully long enough.

Bottom line:
Gorillapod Original only for really small cameras (Ixus).
