1000D stuck in Factory Mode

I've spent a month trying to solve this problem.  I bought a used Canon 1000d off ebay.  I can't connect to to WINxp or Vista. I get the "DCP CONNECT" with a request for drivers.  I've learned elsewhere that the camera is in Factory Mode.  One the 1st Menu screen the bottom option is "Factory Menu"  I've not been able to get
the camera out of Factory Mode.  This camera represents 80% of my astrophotograhy budget for 2013.
Help please.
Lewis

This forum is mostly about CHDK for Canon P&S cameras.

But if you want to ask a question about a Canon dSLR,  you might try posting here : http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php?board=33.0

If you're lucky, you could get help from developers of DSLR-hacks. I'd suggest you to ask in the Magic Lantern forum (note however, that there is no usable hack for the 1000d at the moment).
