Help w/ setting up sx260HS as document camera?

I need to be able to setup my sx260 to preview on my computer monitor whatever's in front of the lense and snap a photo by hitting a key on my keyboard so I can use it as a stationary document camera to "scan" and digitize all my boxes of papers, newspp clippings, etc. I've got the hardware setup to keep the cam positioned in place so all I do is swap out papers. I assume I'd be using a USB connection. Just need to figure out the software.

If you use the forum search function for the words "book scanner" there are at least 15 threads with some discussion on the subject

You can start here: alternative ptp client

See an example here: Chdkptp in headless linux Dockstar - remote control

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for, everything those folks talking about is 'Chinese' to me.
Was looking for a download link somewhere and over an hour later I was only deeper in derpville.

Daniel Reetz uses SDM for his book scanners :-

SDM is not yet available for SX260HS, if you want to try it contact me.

What a great build and even better instructions!

For the record,  there seems to be no technical reason to use SDM rather than CHDK for this project  ....

... other than maybe that CHDK is publicly available now for the SX260HS (with complete source code).

Assuming you're on Windows, you can start by downloading the latest Win32 build of chdkptp from the following page: https://www.assembla.com/spaces/chdkptp/documents

You will also need an alternative driver for chdkptp to work, read the following wiki section: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/PTP_Extension#LibUSB_Driver_for_Windows

Always plug the camera into the same USB socket (you may need to repeat the libusb driver installation to use another).

You need to have CHDK up and running on your camera, and be sure to leave CHDK's USB remote feature disabled.

Installing the libusb driver will disable the camera-related Windows wizard (or whatever it is :) ), though it may still be available if you plug the camera into a different USB socket.

I tried it out on my SX260 and it works. It should do everything you want.

The only problem you might have is with focusing. The attached script lets you set the focal distance as a parameter. When you run it, it switches to manual focus and focuses at this distance.

When I have tried the ptp software, I have not been able to get real time view of the camera display.  I have used the video out of the camera to export the display to my computer or TV.  NTSC usb capture dongles are 8 dollars and NTSC TV's are 10 dollars at the thrift store.

There are several software packages that use ptp (picture taking protocal) to communicate between a computer and camera.  AFAIK,  only the chdkptp package linked above supports "live view".
