When I have tried the ptp software, I have not been able to get real time view of the camera display. I have used the video out of the camera to export the display to my computer or TV.
If you're running the right PTP software, you should see 3 tabs: Console, Files, and Live. After you connect, go to the Live tab and under Stream, click Viewfinder.
The advantage of using PTP is that you have a "shoot" button on the computer so you don't have to touch the camera and possibly mess up the alignment.
It will work, so keep trying. Good luck.
