Would be very nice, indeed

However, I doubt it is feasible because both the camera and an hard disk drive probably work as slave devices.

And even if the camera could take the lead in the connection, a complete driver should be written to take control of the hard disk, which isn't probably that simple.

My two cents, but I may be completely wrong as I'm not a USB expert.

Think the possibilities of travel with the camera and only an external hard drive! or an ipod to download all the photos of your session or vacations on the field.

Nicolas,

Not sure what your need is ... but ... you don't need a CHDK feature for what it seems. Get a small portable hard drive with built-in card reader.

Don't want to promote a particular item here, but I use a 60GB that fits in my hand. Has an internally charged battery that is good for 6GB image download when out and about, and a 100-240 volt AC/DC adapter for home/base. It's also good for regular hard drive function. PM me for details, ask questions.

Hi Nicolas,

Sorry! I poked my nose in without understanding what you were requesting; I still have only a (very) vague idea, which I'll keep to myself.  :-X  :haha

Best wishes,

carlos

Your request requires camera to work in the USB-host mode. I'm not sure, if it is supported by hardware. I'm also not sure, if it's possible to implement, if it's not supported in the chip. But, if it even is possible, we have nothing about chip specs and how to program it. Unfortunately, we are not Canon engineers.

My 570 has an autonomous print function.  You just push a button and it dumps to a compatible printer.  I don't know if that implies it has host mode???  I'll try it on the weekend unless there is someone else that's already tried it.

Maybe you could try writing a program placed on the hard drive that pulls the data off the memory card on the camera.  I'm not sure it would be possible, but it's just an idea.

Huh ? How do you run a program on a USB hard drive ? Sure, they have a firmware of some kind, but in general they are much dumber devices than cameras. Even if you could load custom code (which I've never heard of) it would be much harder to get anything done.

Anyway, as Grand said (back in 2007  ;)) one side of the conversation has to be a USB host, and neither the camera nor a USB drive are set up to do this. In pictbridge / direct print (alluded to by the previous poster), the printer is the host.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
