Please keep your responses civil.
What's "civil" about

maybe CHDK isn't for you
, when obviously I am looking for answers and at  least some reassurance that this thing will not permanently damage my camera? I don't know anything about it at this point. I don't find such a flippant remark in any way helpful or appropriate. It is rude, condescending, and meant to discourage and intimidate the newbie--which BTW you can't succeed in doing. ;) I think MY response was civil by comparison and appropriate in light of that fact. I don't see you chiding the originator of the comment so why do you jump all over the newbie?

While they do provide updates for their DSLR's, Canon rarely provides firmware updates for P&S cameras - I'm only aware of three across their entire product range for the last decade.
It is true that only one of the 4 Canon digital cameras I have had one update, and it was an EOS--BTW the updater is an executable. I don't know if that means that the software guys write good code or that Canon doesn't really care that much. But I have to admit, I have had great service from this company for years and no apparent firmware problems. I still think they should provide the means of reinstalling the original firmware though, even if they never update it. Where's the harm in that? It beats having to send the camera in for, probably expensive, repairs for so simple a cause. I have had the experience of a firmware update crippling a product and the manufacturer removing the previous updates so I couldn't go back without getting a copy elsewhere. The service person told me the product was out of date and that I should get a new one. That despite the fact that it was working perfectly before the update. I think it could have been deliberate. Fortunately the downgrade restored the previous working state.

I think the point you missed is that CHDK does not update the camera firmware. It is loaded at startup using some special tricks and vanishes the moment the camera is turned off. If you insert an SD card without CHDK installed then the camera will start up without CHDK.
That wasn't my concern. See my earlier remarks about this.

While it is possible to compile a version that has the capability to damage the built in firmware you would have to try very very hard to do this.
I would certainly hope so.

Not lost on me at all.  I understand that you want a guarantee that your camera will not be damaged.  There is no such guarantee.   That's why I said that perhaps CHDK is not for you.
No, no guarantee. Just some POSITIVE affirmation that this hack isn't going to do any harm to my firmware and that I can get back to where I was if it ever did. Obviously I'm not going to get that from you. And just for the record, the guys who provide jailbreaks for iOS devices go out of their way to assure the users that no permanent damge will be done to their devices and even provide a means of downgrading to a previous version even though Apple is no longer signing that version or making it available. Something like that would be nice here, though I don't think that will happen by the tone of some of the responses--especially yours.

1. CHDK is not a jailbreak - CHDK does not modify your camera.
2. Recovery from iOS jailbreaks depends on the recovery software built into the devices and iTunes provided by Apple - not the people coding the jailbreaks.
3. Canon do not provide firmware updates or backup firmware - this is completely outside our control. Complaining about it here is pointless, we can't provide them and we have no influence over Canon to provide them.
4. CHDK enables features not provided by Canon. If you abuse it and break your camera you are on your own. If this sounds too risky then don't use CHDK.
5. CHDK is a hack developed by people interested in pushing their cameras beyond what Canon provide. This involves a level of risk. If you want guarantees then don't use CHDK.

And

6. none of the people here who answer questions such as yours get paid - CHDK exists because a whole load of people did something for nothing. As you can see from the list at the bottom of philmoz's posts, he's done more than most.

7. many thousands of people use CHDK every day. So far there's been no case of proven permanent damage. Your A530 must be pretty old now, so given the almost zero risk I'm not sure why you're still asking for a guarantee that no-one can give you, just to safeguard a camera that you can replace via Ebay for less than $30.

@Paco

You obviously do not understand.

I suggest you forget the whole thing, while other A530 CHDK users are enjoying the new features of their camera  ... without any problems.

You're sure of that? It can't even access ROM?
CHDK is loaded from your SD card to RAM, when the camera boots (edit: or when you go through the "firm update" loading method) So loading CHDK does not modify your firmware at all. CHDK does not intentionally call functions that write to the onboard flash where the firmware resides. Some Canon functions do write to onboard flash, for example, Canon firmware menu settings are saved there, and the Canon firmware records a crash log in some situations. CHDK can trigger some of these things indirectly, especially the crash log ;) so it's not completely accurate to say CHDK never writes to it.

Why the contortions that people go through to dump the firmware though?
A firmware dump is necessary to the the reverse engineering to create a CHDK port. It is not used to recover a damaged firmware. In theory this could be possible but no one I know of has ever done it. Then again, no one I know of has ever needed to do it either...

Many thousands of people have used CHDK, and we are not aware of anyone who has destroyed their onboard firmware by doing so. But there's always a first time, and if that risk is not acceptable to you, then don't use it.
Don't forget what the H stands for.
