As far as simple methods go, it's basically either STICK or formatting in your camera using CHDK menus after a firmware update boot ?
The other GUI tools (EOSCard, MacBoot) also belong there. First time users may not find the respective CHDK menu entry easily. And there are those cams without "firmware update" support.
Those utilities are good but they only address setting up the boot sector correctly for CHDK autobooting. Partitioning ( FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, single partition, dual partition ??), downloading the correct source, unzipping correctly, copying files to the right folders / partitions are all left to the end user.
So that just leaves STICK. And even that assumes the user is not frightened of Java apps.
Note that for new test & development versions there is this :
http://www.zenoshrdlu.com/stick/stickx.html I'll guess I'll add an info box to the Prepare Your SD Card page for people working with test builds that points them to that page. More bloat ....
