I have a canon A4050 which the dealer says it is exactly the same as A4000IS, however I'm unable to install chdk. Any ideas?

Well,  it would help if you would be a little more specific about what you tried and what did not work.  For example :

1) What firmware version does your camera have?
2) What CHDK installation file did you try to use?
3) What,  if any, configuration is your SD card setup in?
4) What method do you try -  "firmware update"  or "SD card lock"
5) What did  you see when you did that?
6) Did you read through this carefully :  http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/Prepare_your_SD_card

In addition to waterwingz comments, I would say that the dealer saying it is "exactly the same" is unlikely to be relevant to whether CHDK will work or not. For CHDK to work, it has to have firmware in ROM which is practically identical the firmware of an existing ported camera. Additionally, for the "firm update" method to work, must also have the same product ID. One or both of these criteria have been met by "different" Canon models on a few occasions, but unless the dealer is an experienced CHDK users, it's very unlikely they know.
Don't forget what the H stands for.

... having said all that, the A3150 is "the same" as the A3100, at least to the extent that CHDK for the 3100 with Canon firmware 1.00d  also works on the A3150 ver 1.00d

See my comments here... http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/A3000IS

... so there is a good chance that if you can identify the firmware of your A4050 and it matches the version of an A4000 ...and there is a working version for that version of the A4000 firmware ... and ....

... before you ask ...  at the time of writing, "CHDK is available for the Powershot A4000IS with firmware 1.01B as ALPHA version"
see... http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/A4000IS ..but the poring thread gives more details of the exact status of the port.

Therefore if you have firmware 1.00B (and possibly 1.00A or 1.00C according to the porting thread) ... and you follow the instructions to set up CHDK correctly, as outlined above ... using the same version i.e. using the CHDK for the A4000IS version which matches your A4150IS version ... then it *may* work.

If not... you would be looking at porting the A4050.. look at the A4000 porting thread to see what is involved.

Canon does use some model numbers interchangeably (the Ixus 115 is the same as the Ixus 117 for example and as I said above,  the A3100IS differs very little from the A3150IS), but the only way to know for sure is to try.  Good luck.  :D

Thanks guys for all the help: Here's some of the answers to ur questions:
1) Firmware version number is 101a (using ACID tool)
2) Firmware update method
3) and 4) no special configuration, no sd lock
5) I turned on the cam using "play", selected firmware update, and then got a blank screen. Camera wouldn't start until i remove the battery.
6) Yes, and I have install chdk before on older canon models (e.g a710 is)

So since the firmware for my camera is 101a, and chdk for A4000IS supports only 101b, does that mean it won't work?

Also where do I find the product ID, is it PC1730? or 463063024036

How do I proceed now?

This almost always means you loaded the wrong firmware version.

Yes

I don't know but I don't think you need it for anything at this point.

Well,  you could do a camera firmware dump,  post it to a download site, link that here,  and hope someone will volunteer to port it for you (no promises there).

There is a port available for A4000 1.01a firmware; but it has not been fully tested and is not available on the autobuild server.

You can try building this yourself, or someone who has access to a build environment can create a build and post it here for you to try.

Phil.
CHDK ports:
  sx30is (1.00c, 1.00h, 1.00l, 1.00n & 1.00p)
  g12 (1.00c, 1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  sx130is (1.01d & 1.01f)
  ixus310hs (1.00a & 1.01a)
  sx40hs (1.00d, 1.00g & 1.00i)
  g1x (1.00e, 1.00f & 1.00g)
  g5x (1.00c, 1.01a, 1.01b)
  g7x2 (1.01a, 1.01b, 1.10b)

@bsayrafi
I sent you a PM with the link to CHDK for A4000 101a.
To load it, it is necessary to use bootable sd card method.

Some tests with A4000 101a where done and reported to A4000 porting thread.

If you use Windows, and if you thought the P-ID you can find it with the Registry editor (regedit).
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

Thanks
Yes 101a worked on A4050 IS like a charm.

I only had one issue with making the SD card bootable, EOScard saying FAT VBR load failed. Solved the issue by making SD bootable using my old A710IS Canon  :)

Appreciate all the help guys! This is a great forum.
